Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Make More History; Sweep UAH For First Time Since 84-85

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On Saturday afternoon, for the second time this season, the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team accomplished a feat against the University of Alabama in Huntsville that had not been seen in more than four decades.

When last the teams met, the Trojans took their first win in Huntsville since December of 1984, and on Saturday, Trevecca (13-7, 8-6 GSC) completed the season sweep of the Chargers (14-7, 9-6 GSC) for the first time since that 1984-85 campaign. The Trojans took the win on Saturday at the Trojan Fieldhouse in a 78-77 thriller.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Fred Bailey - who was unusually quiet on the scoresheet on Thursday night in the Trojans' double-overtime defeat to No. 12 West Alabama - opened the scoring on Saturday with a layup just less than two minutes into play. Moments later, Brett Wright connected from deep as the Trojans took the early 5-0 lead. After UAH battled back to tie things at 5-5, Jeremy Jackson Jr, Da'Shon Fisher, Justin Bass, and Tyler Moore each got into the action as a part of a 7-2 Trevecca run that gave the Trojans the lead 12-7.

The game remained close through the remainder of the first half. Trevecca managed to push their lead out to six points at 26-20 on a pair of charity tosses from Bailey with 5:51 to play, but UAH rallied to tie the score at 29 with 2:35 to go. UAH managed to tie the score five times in the first half, but the Trojans did not trail in the opening stanza, and at the break, the Trojans led by a single point - 35-34.

After Bailey opened the scoring in the second frame, UAH scored the next four points - all at the free throw line - to take their first lead of the day at 38-37, and that set off a back-and-forth period. The lead changed hands nine times in the final 17 minutes of action, and neither team ever pushed their lead to double digits. Midway through the half, UAH put together a 10-0 run to turn a 52-50 Trevecca lead into a 60-52 UAH advantage. With 6:44 to go, The Chargers stretched their advantage out to 65-56 on a pair of free throws from Matthew Thurman, but that is when Trevecca dug deep and rallied.

Jax Abernathy got to the foul line with 6:29 to play, and his two free throws set off a 7-0 Trevecca run that closed the gap to 65-63. Moments later, it was Jackson, Jr. who scored off a feed from Bailey that ignited an 11-0 burst from the Trojans - one that featured three assists from Bailey - and Trevecca was back out in front 74-67 with 2:13 to go.

UAH scored seven of the next nine points, and a Thurman triple with 41 seconds to play cut the Trevecca lead to 76-74. Bailey brought the ball up for Trevecca, and with 19 seconds to go, he found Abernathy on the right wing. Abernathy drove to the low block and pulled up for a jumper off the window just outside the paint to push Trevecca's lead to four at 78-74. UAH got a couple of looks at open 3-pointers in the final seconds, but both went begging, and while UAH did get a 3-point play from Quentin Toles, it came with only 0.3 seconds remaining in the game, and the Trojans were able to get the ball in to survive the game with a 78-77 win.

The season sweep of the Chargers may well play a key role down the stretch in the GSC standings. Trevecca is one of seven teams within four-and-one-half games of each other in the middle of the conference standings with eight games to play. The Trojans still have one game left with all of those opponents except Montevallo and UAH. The Falcons swept the Trojans this season, and now, Trevecca has swept the Chargers.

THE TEAM

The Trojans shot the ball at better than a 50% clip in the game - the fourth time this season they have done that. Trevecca was 30-for-55 (54.5%) from the floor, which helped mitigate a 4-for-18 (22.2%) showing from deep and a 14-for-23 (60.9%) effort from the foul line. UAH out-rebounded Trevecca 37-29, but Trevecca held the edge in four of the five enhanced scoring breakdowns. The Trojans out-scored UAH 31-15 off the bench, 18-10 on fast breaks, 27-15 off turnovers, and 48-30 in the paint.

THE PLAYERS

Fisher tied a season-high with 22 points to lead the Trojans offensively, and Bailey (17) and Abernathy (12) also reached double-figures. Bailey narrowly missed out on a triple double, as he led the Trojans with nine assists, and he and Fisher each grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds. Fisher, Bass, and Jackson, Jr. each also had three steals.

UP NEXT
Trevecca will hit the road for their next four games, and in that stretch, the Trojans will face three of the other six teams in the aforementioned mid-pack gaggle in the GSC. The first of those games will be on Thursday, February 5, when they head to Pensacola, Florida to take on the University of West Florida (17-5, 10-4 GSC). They will follow that game with tilts at Valdosta State University (12-8, 7-7 GSC) on Saturday, Auburn University-Montgomery (4-16, 2-12 GSC) on February 11, and Lee University (10-9, 7-8 GSC) on February 14. Trevecca fell at home to West Florida, but the Trojans defeated the other three opponents they will face on the upcoming trip in their respective first matchups of the season.
