Trevecca Men's Basketball | Shooting Droughts Sink Trojans at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - As the second half of the Gulf South Conference slate opened on Thursday night, the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team found themselves in a three-way tie for third in the league. One of the other teams in the tie was Trevecca's opponent on Thursday night, and while the Trojans played them better the second time around, Trevecca still came up short on the scoreboard.

Trevecca (12-8, 7-5 GSC) struggled from long range in the first half, and the deficit proved to be too much for them to overcome, as the Trojans fell on the road at the University of Montevallo (12-6, 8-4 GSC), 93-77.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trevecca scored six of the first nine points in the game, but after a pair of Jax Abernathy free throws, Trevecca endured a scoring drought of more than five minutes, and Montevallo took advantage. The Falcons put together a 13-0 run that gave the Falcons a 10-point lead, and Trevecca battled uphill the rest of the night. The Trojans closed the gap to 18-14 at the 9:22 mark in the first half, but a 10-1 Falcons spurt pushed the lead out to 13 with 6:56 left in the frame. Montevallo led by as many as 15 in the first half, but Trevecca clawed back to within eight at the half, trailing 46-38.

Trevecca whittled away in the early portions of the second stanza, as the Trojans showed tenacity in the face of adversity. Justin Bass, Brett Wright, and Abernathy connected from deep in succession to get Trevecca within five at 58-53, and moments later, Tyler Moore also buried a triple to cut the margin to 62-59. That was as close as Trevecca got in the game though, as Montevallo answered with their own 9-3 run that squelched the Trojans' momentum. Trevecca made only four of their 12 shot attempts in the final 10 minutes of the game, while Montevallo closed the game by making 13 of their 18 attempts, and Montevallo cruised in with the win 93-77.

THE TEAM
The Trojans made 25 of 59 (42.4%) shots in the game, but they connected on only nine of 33 (27.3%) from deep, and Trevecca suffered lengthy shooting droughts at inopportune times throughout the game. At the foul line, the Trojans were 18-for-26 (69.2%). Trevecca managed only 20 rebounds in the game, and they had only seven assists as well. On the positive side of the ledger, Trevecca continued to get production off the bench, where the Trojans out-scored the Falcons 24-7. Trevecca also out-scored Montevallo 22-11 on the fast break and 22-12 off turnovers.

THE PLAYERS
Wright and Abernathy led the Trojans with 14 points in the game, and three other Trojans joined them in double figures: Fred Bailey (12), Da'Shon Fisher (11), and Moore (11). Bailey led the Trojans with four rebounds and three assists as well.

UP NEXT
The Trojans will continue their road trip on Saturday, as they battle the Auburn-Montgomery Warhawks (3-15, 1-11 GSC) at 4 p.m. Trevecca took the win earlier this season in Nashville, though it was in a low-scoring battle.
