TREVECCA MEN'S BASKETBALL | Trojans Secure Sixth GSC Win by Securing the Ball; Down CBU 89-76

NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team took to the floor at the Trojan Fieldhouse, returning home to host two of the longest-standing foes of the Trojans. As the game ebbed and flowed, the Trojans controlled things for much of the night, and Trevecca nabbed their fourth win in their last five games.

Playing short-handed, Trevecca (11-5, 6-4 GSC) picked up a second straight win in GSC play for the first time this season, as the Trojans earned a comfortable 89-76 win over Christian Brothers University (2-12, 1-9 GSC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trevecca opened the game on a 7-0 run that featured scores from Fred Bailey, Jax Abernathy, and Brett Wright. CBU battled to stay close, and while CBU did close the gap to a single point with 9:12 to go in the opening half, the Buccaneers were unable to draw even, and Trevecca answered. The Trojans went on a 9-0 run over nearly four minutes - with almost all of that damage happening at the free throw line - and with 5:15 to play, Trevecca pushed their lead to 30-20. In the opening half, Trevecca feasted at the charity stripe, where they connected on 17 of 19 (89.5%) free throws, and at the half, Trevecca led 47-31.

The Trojans spent the second half managing the gap, and Trevecca used a 10-3 run to open a 21-point lead at 64-43 with 12:39 to play in the game. Down the stretch, Christian Brothers tried to whittle away at the margin, but Trevecca protected the basketball well, and the Trojans took the win, 89-76.

THE TEAM
The story of the night for the Trojans was the turnovers - or lack thereof. Trevecca gave the ball away only twice, a number lower than in any single game in more than two decades. Coupled with a shooting night that saw the Trojans make 28 of 64 (43.8%) shots in the game, and nine of 23 (39.1%) from long distance, Trevecca cruised home with the win. Conversely, Trevecca turned 15 CBU turnovers into 19 TNU points, without surrendering a single point off turnover to the Bucs. Trevecca also outscored CBU on the fast break (12-8) and in the paint (38-26).

THE PLAYERS
Three Trojans scored in double-figures, with Abernathy and Wright leading the charge. The two each scored a team-high 23 points, as Abernathy did damage at the rim and the foul line, while Wright provided the perimeter scoring. Jeremy Jackson, Jr. added 14 points, and he earned his second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds to lead the Trojans. Bailey led the Trojans with five assists in the game as well.

UP NEXT
Trevecca will wrap up the first half of the GSC season on Saturday, when they take on the Union University Bulldogs (7-7, 3-5 GSC) for the 81st time - the second most played opponent in program history - at 4 p.m.
