NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (1-0) opened its 2025 season on Friday afternoon with a sweep of Henderson State University (0-2) in the Fifth Annual Thrasher Classic at Trojan Fieldhouse. Trevecca won 25-17, 25-16, 25-11.
THE SERIES
This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs in volleyball.
THE MATCH
The Reddies opened the match scoring the first two points, but Trevecca scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 8-5 lead. Trevecca built an 11-point lead (20-9), but the Reddies used a 8-3 run to make it a six point match (23-17) late. Trevecca got a sideout and closed it out on a Skias Hainline serve.
HSU opened set two with a 2-1 lead, but 12 of the next 15 points, building a 13-5 advantage. The Reddies rallied, closing the Trojans lead to just two (18-16). The Trojans charged to the finish, starting with a Katilyn Grant kill for the sideout, then Kayla Bullard served the Trojans out with six straight points on serve. She started with an ace, then Mackenzie Martin supplied three kills in the run.
TNU opened the third set with a 5-0 run, meaning the Trojans scored 12 straight points combined with scoring the final seven in the second set. The Trojans were never really challenged in the third.
TROJAN NOTES
Trevecca hit .244 for the match, peaking at .324 in the third. They held the Reddies to .058 hitting. The Trojans had a combined eight aces, with Lily Vanbeber collecting five. Kayla Bullard added two.
Katilyn Grant and Mackenzie Martin led the Trojans with nine kills each. Grant led the team with three blocks. Skias Hainline had 31 assists. Vanbebber and Isabella Sherrod led the team with 13 digs each.
UP NEXT
The Trojans host close out the Thrasher Classic with a pair of matches on Saturday. First, the Trojans face No. 21 Wayne State University (2-0) at 12:30 PM before finishing up with the University of Jamestown at 5:30 PM.
It is the first meeting for the Trojans with both Saturday opponents. Wayne State Wildcats swept Henderson State (25-19, 25-14, 25-18) on Thursday then took out UAH (25-20, 26-24, 25-14) on Friday. The Jamestown Jimmies split their first two matches on Friday. Taking out Erskine College in three (25-15, 25-16, 25-16) before UAH swept them (25-17, 26-24, 25-21).
