NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (7-3, 1-0 GSC) opened their second season of Gulf South Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of longtime rival Union University (2-6, 0-1 GSC) at Trojan Fieldhouse.

THE SERIES
The Trojans, preseason GSC #6 are now 7-4 against the Union Bulldogs, picked #8 in the GSC preseason poll, in the NCAA era.

THE MATCH
With the opening set tied 4-4, Trevecca opened a three-point advantage on a Katilyn Grant kill for a sideout, then back-to-back points on the Charlee Young serve. It fueled the Trojans who built on the lead, eventually leading by eight (16-8). After UU cut the TNU lead to five (16-11), A Kayla Bullard kill to get a side out and then four more points on the subsequent Bullard serve, gave the Trojans a commanding 10-point (21-11) advantage.

Set two started with a 7-2 Trojan lead. The Bulldogs rallied to score five consecutive points to tie the match at 7-7. The Bulldogs did so fueled by the serve of Sydney Davis who had three aces over four serves. Turnabout is fair play, as the Trojans replicated the 5-0 run to regain a five-point lead on the serve of Isabella Sherrod. Sherrod had two aces during her turn at serve. The Trojans built a 10-point lead (19-9) and continued on for the win and a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs gained their first and only lead of the match with the opening point of the third. Trevecca scored six of the next seven points for a 6-2 lead. Trevecca eventually built a 22-9 lead and settled for a 25-15 victory.

TROJAN NOTES
Trevecca hit .296 for the match with a third set .391 attack percentage. The Trojans produced 14 aces with Addison Cunnagin leading the way with four. The Trojans had eight (8) blocks.

Cunnagin led the team with 11 kills and added four digs. Katilyn Grant had eight (8) kills and five blocks. The team had 36 assists with Skias Hainline producing 32.

UP NEXT
The first GSC road trip for the Trojans is also next week. TNU visits fellow preseason #6 Montevallo (3-7,0-1 GSC) on Friday, Sept. 26 at 6:00 PM. TNU leads the all-time series with the Falcons 3-2, sweeping the season series in 2024. Preseason #2 UAH (8-2, 0-1 GSC) on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2:00 PM. The Chargers have a 13-2 edge in the series with all meetings coming in the D2 era. The last Trojan win came in 2021 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on the UAH campus.

The Trojans return home for a three game home stand on Tuesday, Sept. 30 (6:00 PM) when the preseason #3 Lee University Flames (5-4, 1-0 GSC) visit. The Trojans and Flames have a long history in the NAIA era, but in the D2 era, the Trojans have a 2-1 edge in the series. The teams split the season series last year. Preseason # 10 West Alabama Tigers (5-3, 1-0 GSC) opens the October slate when they visit Trojan Fieldhouse on Friday, Oct. 3 at 6:00 PM. Trevecca took both meetings in 2024, the only two games between the two schools in volleyball. Preseason # 4 Mississippi College (4-7, 1-0 GSC) faces the Trojans on the Hill at 1:00 PM on Saturday, Oct. 4. The two teams split the regular season series last year, but the Choctaws won the rubber match in the GSC Championships. They now lead the all-time series 2-1.
