NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University Women's basketball team (7-16, 4-13 GSC) fell 40-49 to Valdoasta State (13-9, 8-8 GSC).
THE SERIES
With the loss, Trevecca sees Valdosta State sweep the season series, as the Blazers improve to 2-0 all-time against the Trojans.
BREAKING IT DOWN
Valdosta State came out aggressive, scoring nine of the first eleven points to take an early 9-2 lead.
Trevecca managed to find some offensive rhythm with a deep three from
Carden Vailes, trimming the deficit to 9-6 with just over three minutes left in the first quarter.
However, the Blazers responded with a 7-1 run to close the period, putting the Trojans in a 16-7 hole after ten minutes of play.
The second quarter was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to find the basket. With over 8 minutes left, The Trojans found some hope, as they battled the game back to a 5 point game (19-14).
The Trojans held Valdoasta State to just 2 made field goals in the second quarter but still found themesleves in a 6 point disadvantage after 20 minutes (22-16).
Valdosta opened the second half with a 6-0 run, extending its lead to double digits.
Trevecca did eventually manage a 6-0 run themselves cutting the lead back to just six with under two minutes left in the third quarter. Valdosta closed the period with a pair of late buckets, regaining a ten-point advantage heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter saw Valdosta maintain control, knocking down early threes.
Trevecca refused to go away, with an 8-2 run to bring the deficit down to seven at 43-36 with under five minutes to play.
However, Valdosta stretched the lead back to nine, and despite a pair of free throws from
Cheyenne Trotter to cut it to seven once more, the Trojans could not complete the comeback.
THE PLAYERS
Brianna Burgess led the Trojans with 13 points, shooting an efficient 3-of-6 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Amaya Thomas followed with eight points, while
Tatum Shaw added seven.
Cheyenne Trotter made her presence felt on the glass, securing a team-high 10 rebounds.
THE TEAM
The Trojans struggled offensively, shooting 26.1% (12-of-46) from the field and 20% (3-of-15) from three-point range. They did, however, find success at the free-throw line, converting 13-of-16 (81.3%). Trevecca won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Valdosta 35-32, but turnovers and second-chance opportunities proved costly.
