NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University Women's Basketball Team (7-15, 4-12 GSC) secured a hard-fought 54-47 victory over the University of West Florida (14-7, 10-5 GSC) on Thursday night, leveling the season series against the Argos.
THE SERIES
This win evens both the historical and season series against the Argos, as this marks the first season these teams have faced each other in women's basketball.
BREAKING IT DOWN
From the opening tip, the game was a defensive battle, with neither team able to pull away early. The first quarter saw both squads trading baskets, with Trevecca edging ahead by a single point at 11-10.
The second quarter saw the Trojans gain momentum, thanks to a stellar first-half performance from
Tatum Shaw. Shaw poured in 14 points before halftime, fueling Trevecca's 17-7 run in the second period.
The Trojan defense held West Florida to just three made field goals (3-13) in the quarter, allowing them to take a 28-17 lead into the break.
West Florida came out of the locker room with renewed energy, but the Trojans refused to ease off.
Both teams matched each other shot-for-shot in the third quarter, each scoring 15 points. Shaw continued her dominance, adding 12 more points in the period as Trevecca maintained its 11-point advantage heading into the final frame.
The Argos made one final push in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to just three points with 1:08 remaining. However, the Trojans stayed composed, knocking down key free throws in the closing moments to secure the victory.
THE PLAYERS
Tatum Shaw delivered a career-best performance, finishing with 26 points on 11-22 shooting, including three three-pointers. She also grabbed four rebounds and recorded a steal.
Brianna Burgess contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, while
Amaya Thomas added five points and three assists.
Cheyenne Trotter was a force on the boards, pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds while adding two points and two assists.
THE TEAM
Trevecca's defense proved to be the difference, holding West Florida to just 29.2% shooting from the field and a dismal 8.7% (2-23) from three-point range. The Trojans also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Argos 48-43, and took advantage of their trips to the free-throw line, hitting 15 of 18 attempts.
