CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Trevecca Nazarene University Women's basketball team (7-19, 4-16 GSC) fell 45-53 to Delta State (13-15, 9-12 GSC) on the road, as the Lady Statesmen complete the season sweep against the Trojans.
THE SERIES
Delta State remains unbeaten against Trevecca, improving to 2-0 in the all-time series.
BREAKING IT DOWN
Trevecca fought hard but was never able to fully seize control, leading for just 23 seconds throughout the game. From the opening 4-0 start from the lady statesmen, it was always a catuchp game for the Trojans.
The first quarter was a slow offensive start for both teams, but Delta State capitalized more efficiently, doubling Trevecca's output to lead 16-8 after 10 minutes.
The second quarter saw the Trojans step up defensively, forcing five turnovers and outscoring Delta State 10-9, yet still trailing 25-18 at the half.
Trevecca's strongest push came in the third quarter, as they opened with an 8-0 run to take their first and only lead of the game. However, Delta State responded immediately with a 15-4 surge, reestablishing a 10-point advantage heading into the fourth.
The Lady Statesmen maintained control the rest of the way, keeping the game out of reach and securing the 53-45 win.
THE PLAYERS
Cheyenne Trotter led the Trojans with a team-high 18 points on an efficient 7-9 shooting, while also grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Monique Emelifeonwu contributed eight points and four rebounds, while
Tatum Shaw added five points and a steal.
Amaya Thomas and
Jayda Woods each chipped in four points, with Woods also leading the team in steals with two.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 38.1% from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 25% (4-16) of their three-point attempts. Free throw shooting also proved costly, as the Trojans converted only 50% (9-18) from the line.
Defensively, Trevecca forced nine turnovers and recorded six steals but was outrebounded 40-32. Delta State capitalized on second-chance opportunities, outscoring the Trojans 16-4 in that category.
