NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (4-1, 1-0 GSC) opened Gulf South Conference play in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night, edging Auburn Montgomery (0-7, 0-1 GSC) 62–61 at Trojan Fieldhouse.
THE SERIES
The victory marks Trevecca's first-ever win against AUM, improving the all-time series to 1–4.
THE MATCH
Both teams battled through a low-scoring opening quarter, with AUM taking a 13–6 lead after holding the Trojans to three made field goals.
Trevecca responded in the second period. A 14-point frame fueled by improved ball movement and defensive stops brought the Trojans back leading 19–20 at halftime. Trevecca held AUM to two made field goals in the second quarter.
The game transformed after the break. Trevecca posted its best offensive quarter of the night, scoring 26 points on 10-for-13 shooting in the third to seize a 46–42 lead. AUM answered with its own push however, scoring 23 in the period to keep the game tight entering the fourth.
The final quarter delivered a back-and-forth finish. With the game locked in the final seconds,
Brianna Burgess attacked the paint, driving left and converting a contested layup with 3 seconds remaining to put Trevecca in front 62–61.
AUM advanced the ball and attempted a final heave from half court but was forced into a heavily guarded, off-balance shot as the Trojans secured the win.
THE TEAM
Trevecca finished the night shooting 40.4 percent from the field (23-for-57), 19.0 percent from three-point range (4-for-21), and 85.7 percent at the free-throw line (12-for-14).
AUM shot 38.5 percent from the floor (20-for-52), 25.0 percent from beyond the arc (2-for-8), and 82.6 percent at the stripe (19-for-23).
The Trojans scored 30 points in the paint, added 20 points off 23 AUM turnovers, and recorded 13 fast-break points. AUM held a 42–27 edge on the glass and totaled 28 points in the paint, 19 second-chance points, 13 points off turnovers, and 7 fast-break points.
THE PLAYERS
Cheyenne Trotter led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds, going 8-for-13 from the field and 7-for-7 at the foul line while adding three assists, three steals, and two blocks.
Jayda Woods added 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting and chipped in two rebounds and four steals.
Burgess finished with 10 points, hitting two three-pointers and delivering the game-winning layup.
Jordan Gillies added five points, five rebounds, and five assists with five steals in 33 minutes.
