Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Sweep West Alabama; at Lee Thursday

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's volleyball team capped off a prosperous weekend on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans (19-6, 13-3 GSC) made their final weekend road trip of the regular season on Friday and Saturday, and after a hard-fought win on Friday night, the Trojans swept away the University of West Alabama Tigers (10-13, 5-10 GSC) on Saturday afternoon 25-15, 27-25, 25-15. The Trojans also got some unexpected help from other teams in the conference, and with four matches left in the campaign, the Trojans now find themselves right back in the thick of the title chase.

SERIES HISTORY

The Trojans are now 4-0 all time against the Tigers. Trevecca not only swept both meetings in each of the Trojans' two seasons in the GSC, the Trojans have now won all 12 sets they have ever played against the Tigers.

MATCH RECAP

Trevecca started the match quickly again on Saturday. The Trojans won the first three points of the opening set - the fourth time this weekend that Trevecca started a set in such a fashion - thanks to a kill from Addison Cunnagin and a pair of Skias Hainline aces. UWA battled back to cut the deficit to one at 5-4, but Cunnagin, Emma Schnitzer, and Mackenzie Martin each notched kills as a part of a 6-1 run that helped the Trojans open an 11-5 lead. After the teams each recorded a pair of 3-0 runs, the Trojans put the set away with a 7-1 run that was capped by an ace from Lilly Vanbebber, and Trevecca took the first stanza 25-15.

Another lengthy run for Trevecca opened the second set - this one a 5-0 spurt that included two more Vanbebber aces - and the Trojans opened an early 9-3 lead. UWA rallied, though, and the Tigers closed the gap to 9-8 with a 5-0 run of their own, which they followed moments later with a 6-2 stretch that gave UWA their first lead of the day at 14-13. The Tigers pushed their lead to three at 18-15 before a service error switched the momentum again. Consecutive kills from Martin as a part of a 4-1 run helped the Trojans tie things at 19, and things stayed tight. The Tigers and Trojans each fought off a set point chance against, but Trevecca broke through late, as Katilyn Grant and Martin each recorded kills in a final 3-0 spurt that gave the Trojans the 27-25 set win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

UWA took two of the first three points in the third frame, but the Trojans answered with five straight points that launched an 11-2 run and helped Trevecca seize control of the third set. UWA cut the deficit to 13-10, but Vanbebber served and started another lengthy Trevecca run - this one 10-2 - and opened a 23-12 lead before UWA took a pair of points to stop the spurt. The Trojans finished things off winning two of the final three points to take the set 25-15 and the match in a sweep.

TROJAN HIGHLIGHTS
  • Mackenzie Martin led the Trojans with 18 kills, and Katilyn Grant added 13 kills in the match. Addison Cunnigan and Emma Schnitzer each added seven kills as well.
  • Skias Hainline dished up 38 assists, and she now needs only 40 assists to catch Chloee McDaniel for second on the Trevecca NCAA Era All-Time Assists List. McDaniel has a career mark of 2,312 assists. Hainline added 11 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.
  • Kayla Bullard led Trojan passers with 12 digs, and Addison joined her and Hainline in double figures with 10.
  • With the wins this weekend, combined with two losses by the University of West Florida Argonauts, the Trojans are only one game behind in the GSC standings with four matches left in the season.
UP NEXT

Trevecca will hit the road for the final time in the 2025 regular season on Thursday, November 6, when they head to Cleveland, Tennessee to battle the Lee University Lady Flames (13-12, 9-7 GSC). The Trojans beat the Lady Flames in Nashville earlier this season, but Lee will have an opportunity to clinch a postseason spot if they are able to take the victory.
