Trevecca Volleyball | Lee Flames Deny Trojans in Reverse Sweep

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – In a renewal of one of the longest-standing series in Trevecca Nazarene University Volleyball history, the Trojans (19-7, 13-4 GSC) headed southeast on Thursday night to battle the Lee University Flames (14-12, 10-7 GSC). The Trojans had an opportunity to clinch a first-round bye in the upcoming GSC Tournament, and in a hard-fought affair, the Trojans watched an early 2-0 lead slip away as Lee rallied to take the match in five sets.

SERIES HISTORY

The meeting was the 48th all-time in the history of the series, and Lee now holds the lead 37-11. The win marked the second straight five-set win over Trevecca in Cleveland for the Flames.

MATCH RECAP

The first set was nip-and-tuck throughout. The score was tied 16 times in the set, and there were eight lead changes as well. Neither team led by more than two points, until a 5-1 run for the Trojans turned a 19-18 deficit into a 23-20 lead late in the frame. During that run, Addison Cunnagin notched back-to-back aces, and the Trojans got kills from Skias Hainline and Katilyn Grant. Lee closed the gap to a single point twice, but a service error ended the set, as Trevecca out-lasted Lee for the set one win, 25-23.

Set two appeared as though it was going to follow a similar script early, but the Flames surged in front in the middle of the stanza. Lee took advantage of seven Trevecca errors to turn a 5-5 tie into a 14-5 lead as a part of a 9-0 run to take what appeared to be a comfortable lead, however, the Trojans were able to battle back.

Brooklyn Smith snapped the Lee run with a kill, and the Trojans slowly whittled away at the deficit. Consecutive kills from Cunnagin and Grant ignited a 5-1 Trevecca spurt that pulled the Trojans within five at 16-11. Moments later, Smith and Hainline combined on back-to-back blocks to cut the deficit to 18-15. With the Trojans trailing 21-18, Cunnagin and Grant combined on a 3-0 run to knot the score at 21, that set off a lengthy battle for the set victory. In the waning stages of the stanza, the teams were tied eight times, but it was Trevecca that outlasted Lee 31-29 to take the 2-0 lead in the match.

The win took a lot out of the Trojans, and Lee took advantage early in set three. The Flames opened the set on a 9-1 run, and the Trojans were unable to get back into the set. Trevecca got no closer than six points the rest of the way, and Lee stayed alive with a 21-16 set win.

The fourth frame was another tight battle. Lee led early at 11-4, but a 5-1 run by Trevecca helped the Trojans cut the deficit down to 12-9. After consecutive points for the Flames, Trevecca took six of seven points to tie things up at 15 all on a block from Grant and Kayla Bullard. With the score tied at 18, Lee pulled in front with a 4-0 run, and the Trojans managed to pull within one, but they could not draw even, and the Flames won the set 25-21 to force a decisive fifth set.

In the fifth stanza, Lee scored the first three points of the set, but a 6-2 Trevecca run gave the Trojans a 6-5 lead. Again, the frame took on a back-and-forth tone, with six tie scores and three lead changes, the last one being the critical one. With the teams tied at 13, the Trojans appeared to win the rally to set up a match point chance, but a challenge from Lee led to a net foul being called against Trevecca, and the point, lead, and match point opportunity switched to the Flames. Lee did not miss their chance, and the Flames took the set 15-13, and the match 3-2.

The difference in the match came at the net. Lee's front line was able to notch a season-high 72 kills to go with 15 blocks, while Trevecca had 61 kills and 13 blocks. The Flames out-hit Trevecca .281 to .146.

TROJAN HIGHLIGHTS
  • Addison Cunnagin led the Trojans with 21 kills - the third time this season she has eclipsed the 20-kill barrier. Katilyn Grant (17) and Mackenzie Martin (10) were also in double figures.
  • Skias Hainline dished up 50 assists, and in the process, she moved to within a single assist of the 1,000 assist mark for the season. She now sits only 28 assists behind Chloee McDaniel who has a career mark of 2,312. Hainline added 13 digs for her 11th double-double of the season
  •  Lily Vanbebber led Trevecca back row players with 18 digs, and Isabella Sherrod (17) also reached double-digits.
  • The loss sees Trevecca relinquish control of their own destiny for the double-bye in the GSC Tournament, as they drop to third in the GSC standings. Trevecca can still secure a bye in the first round with one more victory, and with help, they could get back into position for a bye to the semifinal round of the tournament.
