Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Outlast Choctaws, Remain Second in GSC

CLINTON, Miss.In what proved to be a back-and-fourth affair on Friday evening, the Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (18-6, 12-3 GSC) needed five sets, but the Trojans outlasted the Mississippi College Choctaws (9-15, 6-8 GSC) in five sets, 22-25, 25-16, 25-19, 19-25, 15-10.

SERIES HISTORY
The win breaks a deadlock in the all-time series, as the Trojans now hold a 3-2 all-time lead against Mississippi College.

MATCH RECAP
Trevecca took the first three points of the night, but then the Trojans got caught in a rough rotation, and Mississippi College took control of the first set. A 10-1 MC run turned the early 4-1 deficit into an 11-5 lead, and the Choctaws held the Trojans at arms length for the remainder of the set. Late in the frame, the Trojans rallied with consecutive aces from Isabella Sherrod sandwiched in amongst four kills from Addison Cunnagin and a pair of scoring swings from Kaitlin Grant. The 8-2 run helped Trevecca cut the margin to 24-22, but the Choctaws won the next point to take the opening set 25-22.

Trevecca again took the first three points of the set in the second stanza, but this time, the Trojans were able to keep MC from running out to take a lead. MC did tie the score at 7-7, but five straight Trevecca points gave the Trojans a 12-7 lead. MC again battled back to tie things at 13 apiece, but after a Choctaws' service error, Reese Payne notched a block and a kill to set off an 8-1 run that gave the Trojans a 21-14 lead on their way to the 25-16 set victory that squared the match at one set each.

MC scored first in the third frame, but the Trojans were able to use an 8-2 run to take a 10-5 lead early in the set. Moments later, Grant notched a pair of kills, and Emma Schnitzer added one as a part of another 6-1 spurt that helped the Trojans open their lead to eight at 16-8. The Trojans kept the Choctaws at bay through the end of the set, and Trevecca took a 2-1 lead in the match with the 25-19 set victory.

The teams played things close through the early stages of the fourth stanza, but with MC leading the set 5-4, Trevecca scored three straight to take a 7-5 lead. After a 5-0 MC run gave the Choctaws a 10-7 edge, the teams traded 3-0 runs, and MC held the lead 13-10.Trevecca scored the next four points on a MC service error, a pair of aces from Charlee Young, and a block from Mackenzie Martin to reclaim the lead at 14-13, but a 5-1 stretch gave MC the lead for good in the set, and the Choctaws took set four 25-19 to force a decisive fifth frame.

The Trojans came out in the fifth set and took full command right from the start. Six straight errors from MC gave Trevecca the early 6-0 lead, and consecutive kills from Grant stretched that to an 8-0 run to start the set. Grant and Schnitzer answered MC's first point of the set with kills and Trevecca found themselves up 10-1 in the set. While MC did battle back to cut the margin to 11-6, and then to 14-10, Martin ended things with a kill from Skias Hainline and the Trojans escaped with the five set win.

TROJAN HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kaitlin Grant led the Trojans with 15 kills, and Addison Cunnagin recorded her 10th double-double of the year with 10 kills and 12 digs.
  • Skias Hainline dished up 41 assists, and in the process, she moved beyond the 2,200 career assists list. She now only 78 assists behind Chloee McDaniel who has a career mark of 2,312.
  • Lily Vanbebber led Trevecca back row players with 22 digs, and Isabella Sherrod (14) also reached double-digits.
  • The Trojans' victory sets up an opportunity for Trevecca to clinch a top-four seed on Saturday.  A Trevecca win, coupled with losses by Lee and Montevallo would ensure that the Trojans would secure a first-round bye in the GSC Championship for Trevecca.

UP NEXT
Trevecca will wrap up the weekend trip on Saturday, when the Trojans and West Alabama Tigers (8-12, 4-9 GSC) will square off. Trevecca won the first meetings against the Tigers earlier this season.
