NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Trevecca Nazarene men's soccer (6-7-2, 3-6-1 GSC) kept their postseason hopes alive Thursday with a convincing 4-0 win over Christian Brothers (8-5-2, 5-3-2 GSC) at the Trojan Soccer Complex. With one regular-season game remaining, the Trojans now control their own destiny in the race for the final GSC playoff spot.
Trojan goalkeeper
Hunter Walker also made history, breaking the single-season shutout record with his fifth clean sheet of the year.
SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
The victory marks Trevecca's first ever win against Christian Brothers since joining the Gulf South Conference, improving the all-time series to 1-3-1.
THE MATCH
Trevecca set the tone early behind
Judah Jones' sixth-minute goal, assisted by
Connor Woulfe. Woulfe again played provider in the second half, setting up
Daniel Shiel after cutting inside and finishing just outside the box in the 59th minute to double the lead.
In the closing moments
Christopher Jones and
Jack Franklin were both brought down respectively, and
Tom Hooper buried two penalty kicks in quick succession—one in the 87th and another in the 89th—to cap off a dominant performance.
The Trojans finished with a 17-14 shot advantage (8-6 on goal), while both sides were locked at 17 fouls apiece in a physical contest.
UP NEXT
Trevecca hosts Union (3-5-7, 2-6-2 GSC) this Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in what is essentially a win-and-in match for the Trojans.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
Following Thursday's results, Trevecca climbs into 8th place with 10 points—just ahead of Lee (9 pts) and Union (8 pts).
Lee defeated Union Thursday night to stay alive, and they'll face a tough Christian Brothers side in their finale. Union now must beat Trevecca on Sunday to leapfrog them in the standings and clinch the final playoff berth.
Trevecca would secure their spot with a win over Union regardless of what happens between Lee and CBU. A draw could be enough if Lee fails to beat CBU. A loss would eliminate the Trojans and hand Union the final spot, in case Lee also loses. If Trevecca loses and Lee beats CBU, Lee is in.
Everything comes down to Sunday's results: three teams, one spot, and one final showdown to decide it all.
