Trevecca Men’s Soccer | Trevecca Falls to Mississippi College, Set for Final Stretch in Playoff Hunt

CLINTON, Miss. — The Trevecca Nazarene Men's Soccer team (5-7-2, 2-6-1 GSC) dropped its final road game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-1 to Mississippi College (9-1-4, 6-0-2 GSC) in Gulf South Conference play.

THE SERIES

Mississippi College improves to 2-0-0 against the Trojans all time.

THE MATCH

Christopher Jones scored the lone goal for the Trojans in the 61st minute, cutting the deficit in half at 2-1. However, Mississippi College responded with two more goals in the final 20 minutes to put the game out of reach.

The Trojans were outshot 12-5 and couldn't keep up with the Choctaws, who remained unbeaten in conference play. Despite the loss, Trevecca still clings to postseason hopes heading into the final week of the regular season.

UP NEXT

Trevecca hosts Christian Brothers (8-4-2, 5-2-2 GSC) next Friday at 7:30 p.m. in what could prove to be a must-win match to keep playoff hopes alive. The season finale at Union looms large, but it may not matter unless results go Trevecca's way this week.

PLAYOFF PICTURE

With Sunday's loss, Trevecca has been bumped out of the eighth and final GSC playoff spot by Union University (2-5-2, 3-6-5 GSC). Union drew a point from Montevallo to reach eight points in the standings, one ahead of Trevecca's seven.

With this result the final two-game stretch features no margin for error. The Trojans will first host Christian Brothers a team firmly in the playoff mix. CBU, however, is coming off back-to-back losses this week.

Union, on the other hand, will face a more favorable opponent in Lee (4-6-3, 1-4-3 GSC). Lee, however, is also mathematically alive in 10th place with six points and have three more games left in comparison to Trevecca's and Union's two.

Should Trevecca lose to CBU and Union win their matchup with Lee or see Lee win both of their following two games (including against Union), the playoff race would be over. Union would rise to 11 points or Lee could climb to 12 before Trevecca's opportunity to face Union next Sunday in the season finale, making it mathematically impossible for the Trojans to catch up.
