Trevecca Women's Soccer | Trojans Take Tough Road Loss at DSU; Big Match Sunday at Mississippi College

CLEVELAND, Miss. The Trevecca Nazarene women's soccer team (3-6-4, 1-4-4 GSC) hit the road on Friday afternoon for a pivotal weekend in the Gulf South Conference playoff race - a trip to Mississippi for their final two away GSC matches of the season. On Friday, the Trojans took on the Lady Statesmen of Delta State University (5-4-4, 4-2-3 GSC) in a matinee matchup, and the Trojans dropped the critical tilt, 2-1.

THE SERIES
The meeting is the second in the series, following the inaugural matchup in Nashville last season, and with the win, DSU moves to 2-0 all-time against Trevecca.

THE MATCH
The Trojans fell into an early hole on a tough break in the 14th minute. The Trojans were attempting to clear the ball away, and it deflected into their own net, and DSU claimed the early 1-0 lead. Trevecca spent much of the remainder of the first half trying to push the ball forward, and they did get a couple of chances late in the frame, but the Trojans were unable to cash any of them in, and at intermission, DSU continued to hold the 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, Delta State continued to control possession early, and in the 58th minute, the Lady Statesmen doubled their lead on a goal from Millie Congerton off a set piece, and suddenly, Trevecca's task was more difficult.

The Trojans did not give up, though. The concession of the goal spurred on the Trojans to continue to battle back, and in the 65th minute, Anna Farrell broke through. The junior striker buried a pass from Kate Nelson for her third goal of the season, and with 25 minutes to try to get things level. Tayley Linnenbringer had a chance to square the match less than three minutes after the goal, but Piper Burgess was equal to the task for DSU, and that proved to be Trevecca's best chance late. DSU was able to control the play and put the match away for the 2-1 win and move up into a tie for 5th place in the GSC standings.

Bailie Fiore (3-5-4) made 10 saves in the match - her second consecutive double-digit save performance - despite being saddled with the loss in goal, while Burgess (4-4-4) made just the one save in the victory.

UP NEXT
Better news for the Trojans came from just up the road in Clinton, Mississippi - where the Trojans will be in action on Sunday. The Mississippi College Choctaws (5-7-3, 3-4-2 GSC) also took a 2-1 loss on Friday, meaning the Trojans and Choctaws will battle in a massive tilt for both sides on Sunday. A Trojan victory would pull Trevecca to within a single point of a playoff spot with two matches remaining, while a Mississippi College win would eliminate the Trojans from postseason contention. The match is slated to kick off at 1 p.m.
