JACKSON, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (6-11, 3-8 GSC) saw its conference winning streak snapped by league-leading Union University (15-3, 10-1 GSC) 77-59 in Fred DeLay Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
THE SERIES
Union holds a 39-6 advantage with Trevecca having last won during the 2006-07 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling into a 6-3 hole just two minutes into the game, the Trojans offense rattled off a 14-4 run that spanned nearly four and a half minutes to capture a 17-10 lead. A couple of long balls from the Bulldogs pulled the hosts within one before baskets from both
Tatum Shaw and Amaya Thoams stretched the Trojan lead out to five. Union scored the next five before
Jeannae Bolin beat the buzzer to give Trevecca a 23-21 lead after the first ten minutes.
The Trojans commanded the early parts of the second quarter using a 10-3 spurt to capture a 33-24 lead with just over four minutes to play in the half. From there, scoring slowed on both sides as Trevecca managed a 35-30 halftime advantage.
Out of the break, the Bulldogs flexed their muscles with a 13-2 run that expanded into a 23-4 stretch that really put things out of reach for the Trojans. Union led 53-39 with just under three minutes to go in the third and despite a 3-pointer from
Brianna Burgess to close the frame, held a 13-point lead going into the fourth.
Union was no more friendly in the fourth, than it opened the second half. Out pacing the Trojans by five in the first three minutes of the frame as the 18-point advantage proved insurmountable for Trevecca who fell, 77-59 in the end.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 52.0% from the field. The Trojans were 4-17 (23.5%) from deep and shot 3-6 (50%) at the free-throw line. TNU won the battle of the boards, 48-30. The Bulldogs dished out more assists, 15-14 and also amassed more steals, 14-2. Both teams rejected three shots.
