NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (6-12, 3-9 GSC) fell to the University of Montevallo (8-9, 6-6 GSC) 56-43 on Gary van Atta and Ron Bargatze night in Trojan Fieldhouse on Thursday.
THE SERIES
Montevallo improves to 2-0 all-time versus Trevecca after taking the first-ever contest on December 7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans built out as much as a five point lead in the first quarter after
Cheyenne Trotter scored five of her 12 points in the first seven minutes of game action. Montevallo countered with a quick 5-0 run to tie things at 10-10 and both sides traded baskets in the final minute of the first to play to a 12-12 after the first ten minutes.
Amaya Thomas opened the second quarter scoring with a made free-throw and Trotter's jumper made it 15-14 before the game turned on its head. Seven straight points from the visitors gave Montevallo a 21-15 which it would not relinquish the rest of the way. Montevallo commanded a 27-20 lead at the break.
The third frame played out fairly evenly. Trevecca went a perfect 7-7 at the foul line but only made three field goals as the Falcons edged TNU by a point overall. Montevallo held a 41-33 lead after three quarters.
Montevallo closed the door on a potential Trojan rally early in the fourth. Opening the final period on a 9-3 run, Trevecca was facing a 50-36 deficit with just over seven minutes to play. The Trojans pulled within single digits after a
Tatum Shaw 3-pointer sank with 2:24 to play but could not pull any closer, falling 56-43.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 28.3% from the field. The Trojans were 3-20 (15.0%) from deep and shot 10-14 (71.4%) at the free-throw line. TNU won the battle of the boards, 39-36. The Falcons dished out more assists, 10-9 and also amassed more steals, 11-7. Trevecca rejected one more shot, 2-1.
THE PLAYERS
Tatum Shaw scored a team-high 17 points with two rebounds.
Cheyenne Trotter finished off a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Amaya Thomas added five points, five rebounds and three assists.
UP NEXT
The Trojans finish up the week hosting Auburn University Montgomery (7-10, 5-7 GSC) on Saturday, January 25.
Tip off against the Warhawks is set for 2:00 p.m. and will be the seventh all-time meeting after AUM took down TNU in overtime on December 5. AUM leads the series, 5-1.
