JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's soccer team (0-0-1) kicked off the 2024 season with a 2-2 draw against South Atlantic Conference's Carson-Newman University (0-0-1).
THE SERIES
The Trojans and Eagles played for the first time 10 seasons. Carson-Newman came away with the victory in the only other ever meeting between the two schools.
THE MATCH
The Trojans' first starting lineup of the season featured nine returning players alongside newcomers
Ian Aviles and
Tom Hooper.
The Trojans found themselves trailing early when, just three minutes into the game (2:31), Carson-Newman's Mitchell Honcoop made the most of a tussle in the box following a corner, netting the Eagles' first goal of the season.
Carson-Newman doubled their lead midway through the first half when freshman Antoine Torrent was fouled in the box, earning the Eagles a penalty. Honcoop calmly converted the spot-kick (24:07), securing his brace and putting the Eagles up 2-0.
Trevecca responded quickly, pulling one back moments after a disallowed goal due to offside.
Phillip Collins intercepted a poor goal kick and set up freshman
Chris Douglas, who slotted home the Trojans' first goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
With time running out, junior transfer
Tom Hooper delivered the equalizer in the 88th minute. A cross from Douglas was initially cleared, but Hooper latched onto the loose ball and fired it into the bottom right corner, sealing a 2-2 draw.
