OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's soccer team (1-1-0) lost its first match of the season, 2-0, to Kentucky Wesleyan College (1-3-0) at Panther Field on Thursday night.
THE SERIES
For the first time in 14 seasons, the Trojans and Panthers met in a non-conference match. As Great Midwest Athletic Conference charter members, Trevecca topped Kentucky Wesleyan 16 times in 21 matches including 15 consecutive meetings without dropping points. Overall, the Trojans lead the series, 16-4-2.
THE MATCH
For only the fourth time in 22 matches the Panthers found a way to take down the Trojans. KWC bagged a goal in the eighth minute when midfielder Steeley Walker took her first of what ended up being three shots of the evening. Walker's strike was assisted by Emily Goff. Just under 14 minutes later, the two Panthers reversed roles to double their lead. Walker and Goff both recorded their first goals of the 2024 campaign which so happened to also be the first two tallies for the Panthers on the year. Despite four first half shots by the Trojans, the score line favored Kentucky Wesleyan 2-0 at the break.
The second half saw nearly double the chances for the Trojans but in the end the Panthers managed to hold on for not only the win but secured the clean sheet as well. In the previous 22 matches between these two sides, the Trojans were held scoreless for just the third time ever.
