Trevecca Baseball | Great Midwest Pitcher of the Year Throws Complete Game in Trojans G-MAC Tourney Win over Walsh

MASON, Ohio – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (29-21, 20-12 Great Midwest) opened its final Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament against Walsh University (27-22, 18-14 Great Midwest) with a 3-1 win at Prasco Park's Legacy Field on Wednesday afternoon.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
Trevecca leads the all-time series 10-8, but the Cavaliers are 7-3 vs the Trojans in the last ten meetings.

Walsh took three of four against Trevecca in Canton, Ohio in the regular season series, April 6-7. In 2023, Walsh took three of four in Nashville. Trevecca won seven of the first eight meetings, beginning in 2016.

The two schools have met three times in the Great Midwest postseason tournament in Mason, Ohio with Trevecca leading the series 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The No. 5 seed Cavaliers quickly got their first and only run of the day in the top of the first. A leadoff double followed by a single set things up for Walsh to take the early lead. After a strikeout by Trojan starter Caleb Marks, the next batter he faced connected for an RBI single before a double play ended things for Cavaliers. The Trojans left the bases loaded in the first after a pair of singles and a walk but could not answer. Walsh went down in order in the second while Trevecca managed just a single as the teams reversed those roles in the third.
After another quick inning by Marks in the fourth, the Trojans helped their starter with a two-run bottom half of the inning. After a leadoff single and an error put runners on first and second, both runners moved up on a groundout. Despite batting with two outs, Logan West doubled in both baserunners to give Trevecca the 2-1 lead. Walsh left two on in the fifth after Haven Mangrum made a run saving catch to retire the second Cavalier of the inning. A groundout got the Trojans out of the frame with just one hit allowed. Consecutive walks made things interesting for the Trojans in the fifth, but they could not capitalize, leaving both runners aboard. The sixth saw Walsh get a single, but nothing else as the Trojans went down in order in the home half of the frame.

Two strikeouts for Marks began the seventh and the final Cavalier was retired via a groundout as the Trojans took a 3-1 lead. With two outs in the seventh, a single, walk, and single plated the third run of the day for Trevecca. Walsh was once again retired in order in the eighth, and the Trojans managed just a single before closing things down in the ninth.

A leadoff single for Walsh made things interesting in the ninth, before Marks got himself out of the game with his eighth strikeout of the day.
