MASON, Ohio – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (30-21) continued its winning ways at the final Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament against AshlandUniversity (39-12) with a 10-8 win at Prasco Park on Thursdayafternoon.
SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
Despite not playing a game this season, the Trojans improve to 3-2 all-time versus the Eagles. The team's met for the first time in postseason history a season ago, a 6-3 win for the Trojans.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Playing as the away team for the first time in the tournament, the Trojan bats managed only a single hit in the top of the first. The second Eagle to step up to the plate homered giving Ashland an early 1-0 lead. Trevecca answered back in the second with a run. David Milam walked to lead the inning off and later scored off a Josh Griffin single to right center field. The Eagles got a single in the second inning but were quickly nullified by an inning ending double play. Both sides scored in the third inning. First, the Trojans used a Joey Parliment solo home run to lead things off an take their first lead of the afternoon. Ashland did its damage with two outs in the bottom half of the frame. A double steal tied the game and an RBI single to right gave Ashland the 3-2 lead.
After being retired in order in the fourth, the Trojans allowed another run to score for the Eagles. A leadoff double set the way for a single to right center field to give Ashland a 4-2 lead.Neither side scored in the fifth before the Eagles used a three-run sixth inning to take a 7-2 lead. A two-run single to center field followed by an RBI double to left field gave the tournament's number one seed the five-run lead.
The Trojans responded with a three spot of their own in the seventh. Single, strikeout, single, strikeout put Cole McCallum in position to smack a three-run bomb over the left center field wall and make it a 7-5 game. Ashland used a solo home run in bottom of the seventh to get a run back, but the Trojan bats weren't done yet. Abbott Lawrence led the eighth off with a single and a Logan West walk moved him into scoring position. Carter Warner singled to load the bases before Andru Becker walked, bringing the Trojans within two. Joey Parliment stood in and sent a ball to center field, clearing the bases and giving the Trojans a 9-8 lead. The Eagles went quietly in the eighth before Trevecca added an insurance run in the ninth.
With one out in the ninth, Josh Griffin was hit by the pitch and scored off a Logan West double to right center field to help Trevecca to the 10-8 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
* Joey Parliment was 4-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored, a walk, a double and a home run.
* Cole McCallum went 2-5 with three RBIs, a home run and a run scored.
* Logan West was 2-4 with two doubles, a walk and a run scored.
* Brooks McDonnough (1-1) picked up the win by recording the final two outs of the seventh inning.
* Jack Keele earned his first save of the season by shutting down the Eagles in the ninth.
NEXT ON THE DIAMOND
Trevecca once again takes on the winner of Ashland University (39-12) and Kentucky Wesleyan College (18-31) this time who play in an elimination game later tonight.
First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Prasco Park.
