INDIANAPOLIS – Seventh-seeded Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (33-21) opened the Midwest Regional tournament with an impressive 16-4 win over second-seed and host the University of Indianapolis (35-19) at Greyhound Park on Thursday afternoon.
Trevecca advances to play Maryville University (39-17) on Friday at 1:00 PM CT in the Midwest Region . The Saints beat Grand Valley State University, 8-5, to stay in the winner's bracket with Trevecca. Trevecca holds a 6-5 edge in the series (History), but the Saints took two of three at Trevecca at the start of the season. Maryville won the GLVC tournament.
SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
Trevecca takes a 3-2 lead all-time versus the Hounds with today's win. This is the first time these two sides have met in postseason competition. The Trojans won both games during the 2015 season while the Hounds won both contests in 2013. All four games were played at Jackson Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans got things started with a run in the first after a double, walk and fielder's choice left runners at the corners. Cole McCallum then flew out to center field to score the opening run for Trevecca. The Trojans stretched their lead to 3-0 in the second after a sacrifice fly from Logan West and an RBI single off the bat of Carter Warner. Abbott Lawrence's RBI double in the third gave the Trojans a 4-0 lead.
The Hounds tied the game up in the fourth behind a bunt single, a fielder's choice, a triple and a single that all scored runs.Trevecca punched back with a three-run bomb in the fifth off the bat of Abbott Lawrence to give the Trojans the lead for good at 7-4. A double and a single in the sixth which scored runs made it a 9-4 contest before Trevecca exploded for seven runs over the last two innings.
In the eighth, Haven Mangrum crushed a grand slam followed by an RBI double from Lawrence to make it a 14-4 game. In the ninth, the Trojans sealed the win with a Joey Parliment two-run shot to win 16-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
* Abbott Lawrence was 4-5 with five RBI, two doubles, two runs scored and a home run.
* Haven Mangrum went 3-6 with five RBI, a double, a home run and two runs scored.
* Cole McCallum was 2-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored.
* Caleb Marks (8-0) started and picked up the win by tossing six innings and striking out five with just four runs earned.

The Trojans play third-seed Maryville University in the winner's bracket to be played at 1:00 PM Friday.
