Trevecca Women’s Basketball | Trojans Close Out Saints Behind Big Fourth Quarter

NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (13-7, 9-4 G-MAC) returned home to take down Thomas More University (14-8, 10-5 G-MAC), 84-70, on Tuesday night in Trojan Fieldhouse.

The Trojans and Saints had never met before tonight's game in women's basketball.

BREAKING IT DOWN
After jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead, the Trojans appeared in good position in the first two minutes. The Saints countered with consecutive 3-pointers to cut in to an 8-6 Trojan lead. Trevecca shot out to as much as a seven-point lead at 14-7 on a Lili Wilken 3-pointer with 5:31 to play before three straight long balls by Callie Hunt and Thomas More gave the visitors their first lead at 18-17. Trevecca closed the first quarter on a 7-1 run and took a 24-19 lead into the second frame.
 
Lili Wilken's 3-pointer was the only Trevecca offense for the first five minutes of the second quarter allowing the Saints an extended 12-3 run to take a 31-27 advantage at the 5:02 mark.From there, the Trojans received three 3-pointers from Faith Wilken and Keeley Carter as well as a Kor Fornesa Liu jumper to reach halftime tied at 39-39.
 
The third quarter brought much more intensity as both sides' defenses settled in. Combined a game-high eight free throws were hit as Thomas More continued its dominance from distance. Amaya Thomas hit a buzzer beating shot to give the Trojans a 61-58 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 
To start the fourth, the Trojans locked in defensively, allowing just two points in the opening two minutes. By then, Trevecca had established an eight-point lead that would not be tested. The Trojans started the fourth on a 7-2 run and closed out the game scoring the last six points to win 84-70.

KEY PLAYERS
Keeley Carter produced a team-high 28 points to go with eight assists and seven rebounds. Faith Wilken finished with 20 points and a team-best 10 rebounds to close off the double-double. Lili Wilken had 15 points and four assists. The trio combined for 63 of the Trojans' 84 points.

TEAM TIME
Trevecca shot 49.2% from the field and shot 9-22 (40.9%) from deep. The Trojans shot 17-23 (73.9%) at the free-throw line. Trevecca grabbed 10 more rebounds than Thoms More (39-29)as both teams produced 15 assists and five blocks respectively. 

UP NEXT
The Trojans host conference rivals Cedarville University (5-14, 3-9 G-MAC) on Thursday, February 8 at 5:30 pm.
 
The Trojans stopped the Yellow Jackets' 14-game win streak in last season's only meeting with the 75-61 win in Trojan Fieldhouse. Cedarville holds a 17-4 all-time advantage.
