NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (4-1) won the series with Maryville University (1-2), in an important Midwest Region series. Trevecca won the opener 4-3, then Maryville got the win in game two, 8-6. Trevecca took the series with a 9-4 win on Saturday at Jackson Field.

Trevecca and Maryville have played 11 times since 2014, with TNU now holding a 6-5 edge in the series. Trevecca has won four of the last five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Maryville struck first with a three-run top of the second for a 3-0 lead. Trevecca returned fire with a four-run second inning that included a bases loaded walk to
Andru Becker that scored
Cole McCallum and a
Haven Mangrum three-run double. Trevecca led 4-3 after two innings. Trevecca pushed the lead to 7-3 with a three-run seventh inning when
Cooper Whitt scored on a
Jacob Lester fielder's choice and
Haven Mangrum scored on an error.
Cole McCallum singled to drive in Lester. Trevecca added two more in the eighth with
Jackson Bryan scoring on a
Haven Mangrum fielder's choice and
Cole McCallum did it again with an RBI-single that scored
Jacob Lester. The Saints added a run in the ninth, but the Trojans won 9-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Spencer Wilkins got the win going five innings with three strikeouts.
Haven Mangrum went 3-5 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored.
Logan Harrell and
Cole McCallum both had two hits as well and McCallum had two RBI.
NON-CONFERENCE STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
Maryville is the third consecutive and one of eight non-conference opponent the Trojans will face who are ranked or receiving region votes.
The Saints are seventh in the Midwest Region, while Trevecca is ninth.
Emanual (7-3 overall) and Belmont Abbey (4-3 overall), the Trojans first two opponents, are both receiving votes in the Southeast Region with Belmont Abbey earning a #6 ranking in the preseason poll.
Five future non-conference opponents are ranked or receiving votes in their respective region poll - Lewis University (RV Midwest / 1-0 overall), University of Illinois Springfield (#5 Midwest Region / 3-1 overall), University of Alabama Huntsville (#6 South Region / 7-3 overall), Lincoln Memorial University (#10 Southeast Region / 6-2 overall), Lee University (#9 South Region / 6-3 overall).
Two other non-conference teams, Delta State University (4-4) and Carson-Newman University (5-3), are traditionally strong baseball programs as well.
