NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (3-6, 0-3 GSC) won its final non-conference game over Lane College (6-2, 2-0 SIAC) 45-41 in Trojan Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.
THE SERIES
The third all-time meeting between these two sides broke the 1-1 tie created when Lane won the most recent matchup in 2019-20.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cheyenne Trotter got things started with the opening basket for the Trojans who trailed by as many as 11 points in the opening quarter. Lane responded with a 14-1 run by hitting six of its first 10 shots to command the 14-3 lead. The final five minutes of the first belonged to the Trojans, though, as they produced a 9-1 run to make it a one possession game, 15-12 at the end of the first.
Building upon the momentum that closed the first, the Trojans used an 11-0 run that lasted four and a half minutes, between the first two periods, to recapture the lead at 17-15. The Dragons countered with seven straight points of their own to push their lead back to 22-17. Back-to-back baskets from
Jayda Woods and
Monique Emelifeonwu pulled Trevecca within one, 22-21. Lane held a 24-21 halftime lead as both teams ended the second with nine points apiece.
The third quarter featured four ties and four lead changes with
Cheyenne Trotter pouring in eight of her team-high 10 points in the frame. The Dragons connected for a jumper with :15 to play in the frame to take a 37-35 lead into the fourth.
Lane scored the first four points of the fourth to take a 41-35 lead but could not score again as the Trojans closed the game on a 10-0 run in the final five minutes. Four different Trojans combined for the 10 points as it was
Amaya Thomas' 3-pointer at the 2:21 mark which sealed the victory for Trevecca who won 45-41.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 28.6% from the field. The Trojans were 4-21 (19.0%) from deep and shot 9-15 (60.0%) at the free-throw line. TNU won the battle of the boards, 50-38. Lane dished out two more assists, 13-11 while both sides had two blocks apiece, the Dragons had more steals, 10-6.
THE PLAYERS
Nine of the 11 Trojans who saw action in the game scored, including six who had at least five points.
Cheyenne Trotter collected a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds with a block on 4-of-7 shooting.
Jeannae Bolin added five points and eight rebounds while
Monique Emelifeonwu added seven points and a pair of rebounds.

The Trojans jump right back into GSC play when they host the University of West Alabama (0-6, 0-2 GSC) on Saturday, December 14.
