NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (4-6, 1-3 GSC) won its first-ever Gulf South Conference game, downing the University of West Alabama (0-8, 0-4 GSC) 67-50 in Trojan Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
THE SERIES
UWA and TNU had never played in women's basketball before today's contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans hit their first three field goals and their first free-throw to take an early 8-0 lead out of the gates. The Tigers connected for a 3-pointer three minutes into the quarter and did not score again for another three minutes.
Amaya Thomas answered the UWA basket with a bucket to give Trevecca a 13-5 advantage. Back-to-back UWA baskets made it a one-possession game, 13-10 with just over two and a half minutes to play.
Cheyenne Trotter extended the Trojan lead to seven before UWA hit the final basket of the quarter to make it a 20-15 game. Both sides made seven field goals in the first.
The first five minutes of the second period quickly belonged to the Trojans. Outscoring the Tigers by six gave Trevecca its largest lead of the half at 30-19. Scoring for both sides slowed in the final minutes of the second, as it was UWA who scored the next five points and made it a 30-24 game with just over two and a half minutes to play in the half.
Brianna Burgess ended the Trojan scoring drought with a basket at the 2:10 mark of the period.
Cheyenne Trotter scored the final four points of the half for Trevecca who commanded a 36-27 lead at the break. The Trojans made another seven field goals in the second while UWA made just two.
Trevecca created separation in third behind
Tatum Shaw's eight points. Shaw scored eight of her 13 points in the frame as the Trojans stretched their lead to as many as 17 when Shaw hit her second 3-pointer of the quarter to lead 53-46. UWA made a jumper to cut it to a 53-38 game heading into the fourth. For the third quarter in a row, the Trojans capitalized on seven made field goals.
Through the first five and a half minutes of the fourth quarter, UWA had just one point. The Trojans cooled off scoring as well, holding a 57-39 lead at the media timeout. Down the stretch, Trevecca hit its free-throws, five to be exact, in route to a 67-50 win, the school's first-ever Gulf South win in women's basketball. The 67 points scored was the third most points of the year and second most in regulation.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 47.1% from the field. The Trojans were 4-12 (33.3%) from deep and shot 15-21 (71.4%) at the free-throw line. TNU won the battle of the boards, 44-36. Trevecca dished out more assists, 16-5 while also producing more blocks, 8-3. The Tigers created more steals, 10-7.
THE PLAYERS
Tatum Shaw scored in double figures for the fifth time this season with a game-high 13 points with a pair of rebounds and assists.
Monique Emelifeonwu also touched double digits with 10 points and four rebounds.
Amaya Thomas added eight points with a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Trojans hit the road next week to take on Valdosta State University (6-2, 1-1 GSC) on Thursday, December 19.
