MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (2-6, 0-3 GSC) fell to the University of Montevallo (4-3, 2-0 GSC) 57-40 in the Central State Bank Arena on Saturday afternoon.
THE SERIES
Before today's contest, Trevecca and Montevallo had never met before in women's basketball.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite some early turnover troubles by the Trojans on offense, defensively Trevecca was locked in. The Trojans held a 5-3 lead at the media timeout, but were doubled up in the final five minutes of the first quarter as the Falcons found their shooting stroke. Montevallo led 11-9 after the first period.
After the Trojans tied the game on the first basket of the second quarter, the next several minutes saw things stay within a possession or two before Montevallo opened its largest lead of the half using a 6-0 run with just under three minutes to play, to go up 25-17. The final two buckets of the half belonged to Trevecca, though, who pulled within 25-22 at the break.
Five points from
Amaya Thomas got the Trojans rolling in the opening minutes of the third. Trevecca tied it at 32-32 behind a
Jeannae Bolin layup at the 4:46 mark. The Falcons, however, led 40-38 as their shooting continued to improve from the field as the game progressed.
The fourth quarter quickly went south for the Trojans who after tying it at 40-40 did not score again in the final frame. Montevallo outscored Trevecca 17-2 in the fourth to win, 57-40. The Trojans last led at 36-34 with 3:14 to play in the third and were outscored 23-4 in the final 13:06 of the game.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 41.5% from the field. The Trojans were 3-11 (27.3%) from deep and shot 3-10 (30.0%) at the free-throw line. TNU was outrebounded by one, 32-31. UM led in assists, 9-8 while the Trojans held the edge in blocks, 4-1. UM had 14 steals to TNU's nine.
THE PLAYERS
Jeannae Bolin offered a team-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting with three steals and two rebounds.
Amaya Thomas reached double figures as well with 10 points and four rebounds.
Cheyenne Trotter added a team-best six rebounds with two steals.
UP NEXT
The Trojans play their final non-conference game tomorrow On the Hill when Lane College (5-1, 2-0 SIAC) visits Trojan Fieldhouse for an afternoon tilt.
Tip-off with the Dragons is set for 3:00 p.m. and will be the third all-time game. Both sides have won a game, most recently Lane in 2019-20.
