MEMPHIS – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (0-2) closed the weekend losing to Lynn University (2-0) 54-49 in the South Region Crossover on Saturday afternoon in Canale Arena.
THE SERIES
The Trojans and the Fighting Knights had never played before in women's basketball.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans slowly settled into their offense in the first quarter, taking their first lead of the game just under two minutes in when
Monique Emelifeonwu connected for a 3-pointer. A minute and a half later
Tatum Shaw also hit a 3-pointer to give the Trojans a 6-4 advantage.
Amaya Thomas scored the next four points for the Trojans, all not from distance, trimming what became a five-point hole to three. A 3-pointer from Lynn's Trinity Mocadlo gave the Fighting Knights their largest lead of the frame at 16-10, before four straight Trevecca points made it 16-14 after the first.
The Trojans matched their 14 first quarter points in the second and kept up their shooting from range.
Amaya Thomas scored six of her 10 first half points all in the final 2:35 of the half to help the Trojans to a 28-27 lead at the break.
Thomas opened the third quarter scoring with a jumper to give the Trojans their largest lead, 30-27. Lynn used a 10-0 run to go from down one to up nine at 45-36 with 2:26 to play in the third. Trevecca scored twice more to trim the deficit to 45-40 heading into the fourth.
The Trojans stormed out in the fourth quarter, using a 9-2 run to re-capture the lead, 49-47 with 6:50 to play but the offense ran out of steam. The Fighting Knights took the final seven points of the game to win, 54-49.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 43.2% from the field and were 5-10 (50.0%) from deep. The Trojans shot 6-9 (66.7%) at the free-throw line. Lynn grabbed more rebounds, 33-26, while both teams had 13 assists. The Trojans had more blocks (5-2) and steals (4-1).
THE PLAYERS
Amaya Thomas led all scorers with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Tatum Shaw added 11 points and two rebounds while
Cheyenne Trotter recorded four points and a team-high nine rebounds.
UP NEXT
The Trojans continue their non-conference slate of games when they take on two Kentucky schools next week.
First, on Tuesday, November 12 Trevecca battles Kentucky State (0-1) at 5:00 p.m. before taking on former Great Midwest rival Kentucky Wesleyan College (1-0) on Saturday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m.
