FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (1-2) picked up its first win of the season, beating Kentucky State University (0-2) 71-61 in the William Exum Center on Tuesday night.
THE SERIES
The Trojans and Thorobreds have met six times, with Trevecca owning a 4-2 all-time series lead, having won the previous four meetings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans got off to a hot start converting on four of their first eight trips down the floor for a 9-2 lead with 6:21 to play. Both sides traded baskets until the 3:55 mark in which Trevecca lead 14-7. The frame ended on a 10-0 Thorobred run, though, as the hosts took an 18-14 lead into the second period.
After KSU hit its opening basket of the second, the Trojans trimmed the deficit to three with three made free throws, 20-17. The Thorobreds then went on a 7-0 run to give the hosts a 27-17 lead. KSU built its largest lead of the night with just over five minutes left in the half with a made 3-pointer before Trevecca cut the halftime deficit to seven (33-26) outscoring KSU 5-1 from there.
The Trojans turned up the defensive pressure to begin the third, forcing three KSU turnovers on the Thorobreds' first three possessions. Trevecca capitalized on its efforts and cut the deficit to 33-32 with 7:44 to play in the third. After
Cheyenne Trotter made a driving layup to make it a one-point game, 35-34, a 10-1 run from KSU over the next two minutes extended the lead to 45-35. The game of runs continued after the media timeout as the Trojans rattled off an 11-2 stretch to make it a one-point game again, 47-46. KSU led, 53-50, entering the fourth quarter.
It was all Trojans in the final 10 minutes. Trevecca recaptured the lead, 60-59, off a
Tatum Shaw 3-pointer and did not look back from there. In fact, after Shaw connected for the 3-pointer with 5:08 to play, Trevecca scored the next 11 points, allowing KSU only one more made basket. Despite the Thorobreds basket with just three seconds remaining, the Trojans won 71-61.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 45.0% from the field, gradually increasing their efficiency with every quarter. The Trojans were 4-15 (26.7%) from deep and shot 13-22 (59.1%) at the free-throw line. KSU grabbed more rebounds, 39-32 and assists, 11-9. The Trojans more than doubled up the Thorobreds in steals, 15-6 and had two more blocks, 6-4.
