MEMPHIS – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (0-1) opened its regular season by falling to Barry University (1-0) 72-50 in the South Region Crossover on Friday afternoon in Canale Arena.
THE SERIES
The Trojans and Buccaneers had never met before in women's basketball.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Scoring was at a premium for both sides in the first quarter as the Trojans made a total of four field goals in the frame. After the Buccaneers scored on their first possession, the Trojans responded with a bucket before a nearly two-minute scoring drought ensued. After BU re-took the lead, the Trojans strung together consecutive baskets to take a 7-4 lead off a
Tatum Shaw 3-pointer. The Bucs countered with five points of their own and took a one-point lead, 10-9 into the second quarter after hitting a free-throw.
The first five points of the second belong to Barry before
Cheyenne Trotter hit one of two free throws to break the Trojans' silence in the second. A
Jenissa Varela 3-pointer and layup from Trotter cut it to a 17-15 game before Barry used an 11-0 run to take control of the game. Varela made one of two free-throws just before halftime to make it a 28-18 contest at the break.
Barry extended its 11-point run to 15 to open the third quarter. The damage was done. The Bucs went out to outscore the Trojans by nine in the quarter to take a 49-30 lead into the fourth.
Jayda Woods scored all five of her points in less than a minute and a half in the fourth quarter to help the Trojans get as close as 17 at 55-38, but Barry held on for the 72-50 despite a 8-0 run by Trevecca in the frame.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 35.7% from the field and were 3-12 (25.0%) from deep. The Trojans shot 17-28 (60.7%) at the free-throw line. Trevecca was more than doubled up in rebounds, 49-22, and were doubled up in assists, 16-8. Both teams had three blocks.
