NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (2-1, 0-0 Gulf South) delivered a dominant performance in a 112-66 blowout over Welch College on Monday night, setting a new school record for assists in a single game.
THE SERIES
This was the first-ever meeting between Trevecca and Welch College in men's basketball.
BREAKING IT DOWN
Trevecca wasted no time taking control, opening the game on a 10-0 run sparked by
NaVuan Peterson's layup. The Trojans showcased their depth and unselfish play, leading by as many as 24 points in the first half and taking a 53-29 advantage into halftime.
The second half was more of the same, with Trevecca maintaining a relentless pace. The team set a new school record with 29 assists; the previous record of 25 was set twice: once during the 2015-16 season against Southern Indiana and again in the 2017-18 season against Ohio Valley.
The Trojans also came close to breaking the school's single-game steal record, finishing with 13 steals—just one shy of the 14-steal mark achieved twice in the 2012-13 season against Cedarville and Lincoln Memorial.
KEY PLAYERS
Jikari Johnson led the way with 15 points, shooting 5-7 from the field, including three three-pointers. He added 3 steals to his stat line.
Caleb Terry added 13 points, going 5-7 from the field and pulling down 6 rebounds.
Hank Hutcheson and
Mason Brown were key contributors off the bench, each scoring 14 points. Brown was especially sharp from long range, hitting 4 of 5 three-point attempts.
Spencer White scored 12 points on 4-8 shooting, connecting on 4 of 7 three-point attempts.
Mateo Esmeraldo tallied 12 points, 6 rebounds, and a team-high 6 assists.
THE TEAM
Trevecca showcased an efficient offensive performance, shooting 56% from the field (42-75) and 40% from beyond the arc (14-35). The Trojans dominated in the paint with 56 points while capitalizing on 29 forced turnovers for 28 points. They added 14 second-chance points, 29 fast-break points, and an impressive 63 points from the bench, demonstrating their depth and balance. On defence, the Trojans fell 1 steal short of the school record with 13. The Trojans also added 3 blocks.
