NASHVILLE - The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (6-6, 2-3 G-MAC) lost a Great Midwest battle with Malone University (7-6, 3-2 G-MAC), 80-75, on Saturday afternoon in the Trojan Fieldhouse.
The Pioneers have won all ten meetings in the series.
BREAKING IT DOWN
Brinn Hunt hit a three for Malone, foreshadowing what was to come throughout the rest of the game, to put the Pioneers up 5-3. Trevecca tied the game 5-5, but the Pioneers flexed with a barrage of three pointers. Kyli Horn hit two and Brooklyn Troyer and Brinn Hunt added one bomb in a 12-2 run that put the visitors up 17-7 with 4:17 left in the quarter. With 1:51 left in the quarter, Malone led by nine (21-12).
Faith Wilken his a field goal and
Lili Wilken hit a three to pull the Trojans within four (21-17) at the quarter end. In the quarter, Malone went 5-8 from three point range. Trevecca had three, two from
Lili Wilken and one from Breanna Burgess.
Trevecca came out hot in the second, tying the game at 21-21. Later, and Malone leading 31-30, Trevecca made their most significant run of the game. Konner Gambrell scored six consecutive in an 8-0 Trojan run that put the Trojans up seven (38-31) with 2:02 left in the quarter. Malone clapped back, cutting the Trojan lead to just three by outscoring the Trojans 7-3 to the halftime break. Malone was 6-10 from three point range in the first half. Trevecca outscored Malone 24-17 in the second.
A Brinn Hunt three to open the third quarter tied the game at 41-41, but
Kor Fornesa Liu scored four straight to put the Trojans up 45-41. Hunt hit two more three-pointers while Troyer and Horn chipped in one each to fuel a 20-8 run that put Malone up eight (61-53) at the end of the third.
Malone outscored Trevecca 23-12 in the third, the game's widest quarter scoring gap.
A Pioneer 8-0 start to the fourth, propelled by a three from Horn and Anna Krupa, but Malone up 16 (69-53). With 6:00 to go, Malone led by 17 (72-55) their largest lead of the game. The Trojans made a 10-1 run, cutting the margin to just eight (73-65) with 3:38 left. The Pioneers rebuilt a double-digit lead, but settled for a five point (80-75) win.
KEY PLAYERS
Five Trojans reached double figures in scoring led by
Faith Wilken's 16. She added five rebounds, three assists and five steals.
Lili Wilken scored 14 and shot 44% (4-9) from the three-point range. Konner Gambrell added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Keeley Carter scored 12 and dished out five assists.
Kor Fornesa Liu had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Kyli Horn, for Malone, hit 6-6 from three-point range and had a season high 23.
TEAM TIME
Malone hit 14 three-pointers, three more than any other game this year. Three Pioneer players scored a season high in the game. The Trojans shot 41.3% (26-63) from the field, and 82.4% (14-17) from the foul line. The Pioneers out bounded the Trojans 35-32. Trevecca dominated points scored off turnover 28-12. Trevecca had 30 to Malone 26 points in the paint.
