NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (8-6, 4-3 G-MAC) defeated Northwood University (8-6, 4-3 G-MAC), 89-76, on Saturday afternoon in Trojan Fieldhouse.
The Trojans have never lost to the Timberwolves since Northwood joined the conference prior to the 2022-23 season having won all three games.
BREAKING IT DOWN
After
Konnor Gambrell made the opening basket for the Trojans, the visitors quickly spouted of seven straight points behind two made 3-pointers by Maddie Voelker. Despite dropping into as much as an 11-point hole (15-4) when Alli Keyser connected from deep with 4:49 to play, the Trojans were resilient. The Trojans retaliated with three made 3-pointers in the closing minutes of the first and even pushed ahead for a 23-21 lead.
The second quarter was back and forth in the early going, before the Trojans responded and ultimately retook the lead for good when
Monique Emelifeonwu connected from range at the 6:09 mark in the second quarter. The made basket gave the Trojans a 32-31 advantage which was stretched to seven at halftime leading 43-36.
In the third, the Timberwolves cut the deficit down to as little as five in the opening minutes, but would not get any closer the rest of the way. The Trojans relied on points from the free-throw line in the quarter, making six foul shots to earn a 68-55 lead after three.
The Trojans opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to push their lead to 19 before Northwood found its rhythm from range. Behind four 3-pointers, the Timberwolves got back within 10 points at 84-74 with just under two minutes to play. From there, the game lengthened into a foul shooting contest as the Trojans held on for the 89-76 victory.
KEY PLAYERS
Six Trojans reached double figures in scoring highlighted by
Konnor Gambrell with 18.
Faith Wilken had 14 points and finished off the double-double with 13 rebounds.
Keeley Carter also collected a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while
Lili Wilken finished with 10 points and nine assists.
TEAM TIME
Trevecca shot 44.7% (34-76) from the floor and made seven 3-pointers. The Trojans 14-18 (77.8%) effort at the foul line helped strengthen the lead late. The Trojans won the rebounding battle, 51-39 and had five more assists 19-14.
UP NEXT
Trevecca takes to the road next Thursday and Saturday for games against G-MAC leading Ashland University (14-1, 7-0G-MAC) on Thursday at 5:30 pm, before battling Tiffin University (4-12, 2-6 G-MAC) Saturday at 1:00 pm.
