Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Fall Twice in Five on Saturday at UAH Invite

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (3-6) lost its Saturday matches on the final day of the University of Alabama Huntsville Invitational presented by the Huntsville Sports Commission. In Saturday's opener, TNU fell in five (3-2) to the University of Montevallo (1-6). Montevallo won 15-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 11-15. Trevecca played the host University of Alabama Huntsville (4-3) in the events final match and lost to the hosts in five sets (3-2). The Chargers won a spectacular match, 25-22, 12-25, 25-19, 15-25, 14-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
TNU VS MONTEVALLO 
Montevallo opened the match with a dominating first set. A 4-4 set turned with a 7-1 run by Montevallo, giving them a 11-5 edge. MU continued to build their margin until the 25-15 final.
 
Trevecca opened the second set with a 4-1 lead and never let Montevallo get closer than two the rest of the way. Trevecca led from start to finish.
 
The set was tied 5-5, but Montevallo pushed ahead 12-6 on a 7-1 run. A very similar start to the first set. TNU did get a bit closer, but it was still all Montevallo in the second for a 2-1 set lead.
 
In the fourth, neither team could get more than a two point edge until TNU pulled ahead by three (12-9). Montevallo was ready to give up the set and rallied to take a 16-15 lead. In fact, Montevallo pulled ahead by two a couple of times late including at 22-20. Trevecca, in a much win scenario, fought back with a 5-1 run to extend the match to a fifth set.
 
The fifth set was close throughout. Trevecca did get a two point edge (6-4), but Montevallo rallied and pulled ahead 10-7 and then held off the Trojan rally for a 15-11 advantage.
 
The Falcons are 2-1 in the all-time series, taking the last meeting in 2022 and TNU winning in 2019.  
 
TNU VS UAH
Trevecca served notice they were ready to play, though the Chargers led early, the Trojans never lost touch with the hosts. Trevecca took its first lead at 17-16. UAH eased back in front and the Trojans didn't lead again until they pulled ahead 22-21 and gained a modest margin that held up for a 25-22 win.
 
The Chargers took notice and dominated the second set. UAH led 18-6 and won 25-12.
 
Trevecca opened the third with a 10-2 start and led most of the set, but UAH did tie the match at , but the Trojans never trailed and won 25-19.
 
In the fourth, the teams were close early and tied 6-6. A 7-0 run put UAH up 13-6 and the Trojan never got back in the set before UAH won 25-15, pushing the match to a fifth set.
 
In the fifth, it looked like UAH was going to continue their momentum with a 6-2 start. Trevecca had their own 6-2 run for a 8-8 tie. Trevecca made it a 8-2 run and a 10-8 lead. With Trevecca up 12-10, UAH made a final push with a 4-0 run and a 14-12 advantage. Trevecca fought off set and match point to send the set to extra points where the Chargers managed a 16-14 victory.
 
Huntsville leads the series 21-5, but TNU had won two of the previous three meetings, including a three-set sweep in the last meeting.
 
TEAM REPORT
TNU VS MONTEVALLO 
Trevecca hit .104 (46-28-173) for the match while Montevallo hit .154 (54-25-188). Montevallo had six service aces to TNU's three. Trevecca had 25 blocks, but 11 service errors played a role.
 
TNU VS UAH
Trevecca hit .141 (51-26-177). The top set was the first when the Trojans hit .350 (16-2-40). Trevecca had 21 blocks to just 12 for UAH. UAH hit .169 (59-50-172) for the match, peaking at .464 (59-30-172) in the second. UAH had 10 service aces and 88 digs.
 
TROJAN PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS
TNU VS MONTEVALLO 
Emma Titus led the way with a season-high 18 kills while hitting .241. She added 17 digs and six blocks and one service ace.  Katie Crutchfield had 16 digs. Cara Maguire had 12 kills and eight digs.
 
TNU VS UAH
Emma Titus hit .230 with 20 kills and pulled an impressive double-double for the second match in a row, collecting 16 digs. She had a service ace and three blocks. On the day, Titus had 38 kills, 33 digs, nine blocks, and two service aces. Maddie Wilds had a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs. Emilee McDonald joined the double-double parade with seven kills (hit .333), 33 assists, 11 digs, and four blocks. Katie Crutchfield had 18 digs.
 
UP NEXT
Trevecca hosts its first Great Midwest match of the year on Thursday when Ohio Dominican University (3-2) visits at 6 PM. Trevecca is picked third in the South Division while ODU is picked fourth.
