NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's soccer team (0-1-0) opened the 2023 season with a 2-1 non-conference loss on the road at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (1-0-0).
The Chargers, a member of the Gulf South Conference, picked up just there second win in the series. Trevecca leads the all-time series 3-2-2. This is the first win for UAH in the NCAA D2 era. Their previous win came in 2004 when both teams were in the NAIA. Trevecca has a 2-1-1 edge in the D2 era. .
The Trojans connected first with a
Marlon Grossmann goal at 57:45. It is the first goal of the season for last seasons leading scorer for the Trojans.
The Trojan goal woke the Charger offense as Justin Alcantara leveled the match at 1-1 with a goal less that five minutes later at 62:12.
A Jose Bannwart header at 86:11 off a Colby Nesbit (assist) corner was enough to push the match in the Chargers favor 2-1.
The Trojans return to action Saturday, September 2 (2:30 PM) against another Gulf South foe in Shorter University (0-1-0). The Eagles lost, 2-0, at home in Rome, GA on Thursday night to King University.
The Trojans and Eagles have played five times previously in the NCAA D2 era, the Eagles lead the series 4-1-0. The Eagles won 4-1 last year but hadn't played TNU since 2016 before that meeting. Trevecca won that 2016 meeting, 3-2, in Nashville.
