NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (5-2, 2-0 Great Midwest) moved to 2-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play with a 103-71 win on the road at Northwood University (2-6, 0-2 Great Midwest) on Saturday afternoon at Riepma Arena.
Trevecca hosts Christian Brothers University on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. The Bucs are a member of the Gulf South Conference, the league the Trojans are moving to beginning next season. CBU is also a former conference foe when the teams were members of the NAIA and the TranSouth Athletic Conference. Christian Brothers won the Nov. 18 meeting earlier this year in Memphis, 110-109 in three overtimes.
The 5-2 start is the best start for any Trojan squad in the NCAA Division II Era. The 2011-2012 team, which was the transition season between the move from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, is the last team to start 5-2.
The last time the Trojans started 2-0 in the Great Midwest was during the 2016-17 season when they opened with an overtime win over Cedarville and a win over Ohio Valley University.
Trevecca set a new all-time record for made three pointers in a game and NCAA Era three-point field goal percentage record in a game. The Trojans were 19-of-28 (67.9%) from beyond the three-point arc against the Wolves. Breaking a record held by the 2018-19 team, that squad hit 18 in a game twice. Once against Tiffin and once against Davis & Elkins.
Both squads have improved offensively from last season when they combined to produce the lowest scoring averages in NCAA Division II, 55.7 and 56.8 points per game. This year, prior to today's game, Trevecca was averaging the 26th most points per game, 88.5 and Northwood was averaging 70.1.
