ROME, Ga. - The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (3-2, 0-0 Great Midwest) won a non-conference road game at Shorter University (2-2), 84-80, at. The game was tight throughout, with the Trojans gaining the win with a late run in overtime.
BREAKING IT DOWN
The Hawks scored the first two points of the game, but the Trevecca offense kicked in and went on a 6-0 run, building a 6-2 lead. Trevecca continued the run, extending the lead to 14-5 (13:58) on the heels of an 8-0 run. The
Hawks rallied with a 7-0 run, cutting the Trojan advantage to two (16–14 / 10:09). After Trevecca pushed the lead back to five (19-14 / 8:43), the Hawks took a 22-19 (6:17) lead with an 8-0 run. From there, the teams swapped the lead over the final minutes of the half. With Shorter up 28-27,
Jamal Cannady Jr. drained a three-pointer with 1:03 left in the half, giving TNU a 30-28 advantage at the intermission.
The early minutes of the second half, like the first, saw both teams holding a modest lead. Shorter made the first move, building an eight point lead a couple of time, first, with a 12-5 run that gave them a 53-45 lead with 8:59 left. Trevecca didn't get the lead again in regulation. The last lead for Trevecca in the half was at 38-37 with 15:02 left. TNU did cut it to one a couple of times, but didn't tie (70-70) the game until
Jalen Page hit a free throw with nine seconds left in regulation. Shorters game winning field goal attempt failed and the game moved to extra time.
Jalen Page continued his hot hand opening the overtime period with one of his four three-point field goals. Neither team could get a comfortable margin in overtime, but with 2:30 left Shorter went up three (80-77) on a three pointer. It was the last points they would score and the Trojans closed the game scoring seven unanswered points for an 84-80 win.
KEY PLAYERS
Trevecca shot 47% (31-66) from the field, 34.5% (9-26), and 72.2% (13-18). The Trojans outrebounded the Hawks 38-31. The big edge for the Trojans was a 42-38 advantage in points scored in the paint. The Hawks had a 27-11 edge in bench scoring. Trevecca shot 48.8% (14-29) in the second half and were 5-6 (83%) in overtime.
