CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (2-2) saw their furious comeback fall short, 66-63, on Saturday afternoon at Lee University (1-2) in Paul Dana Walker Arena.
The meeting is the second of three straight games for TNU against future Gulf South Conference members. The Trojans are moving to the Gulf South next season. Next, the Trojans welcome Union University to the Trojan Fieldhouse on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
BREAKING IT DOWN
Lee, with their first 0-2 start under longtime head coach Marty Rowe, came out on fire with a 14-4 start. Trevecca closed the gap to four (14-10), but the Flames continued to pour it on and led by 25 (42-17) with 1:47 left in the half. The Flames led by 22 at the half, 42-20.
The Flame lead moved to 26 (55-29) with 3:46 to go in the quarter and led by 25 (61-36) through three quarters.
Jayda Woods opened the fourth with a layup to start the torrid fourth quarter run by the Trojans. With 5:11 to go in the fourth,
Amaya Thomas scored a layup to pull the Trojans to within eight (61-53) and capped a 17-0 run for the Trojans to start the fourth.
After a Lee field goal to push the lead to ten again (63-53), Trevecca used another run, this time 10-3, to pull within three when
Lili Wilken hit a three with :36 remaining. The Trojans got the ball back with :05 on a Lee turnover. After a timeout, the Trojans got another good look but a three by Wilken was a little long and the Flames claimed the win.
Trevecca outscored Lee 27-5 in the fourth quarter. Lee outscored the Trojans 17-10 in the first and 25-10 in the second.
KEY PLAYERS
Lili Wilken led the Trojans with 17 points and six rebounds. Keeley Carter scored 11. Konnor Gambrell and Amaya Thomas each added nine. Jayda Woods and Carter added a team-high three assists. Thomas and Woods led the team with four steals each.
TEAM TIME
Lee shot 22-38 57% through three quarters, but were 1-9 in the fourth. Trevecca shot 35% (13-37) through the first three quarters and hit 9-15 (60%) in the fourth. For the game, Trevecca shot 42.3% (22-52) from the field, 33% (5-15) from three, and 73.7% (14-19) from the foul line. Lee shot 48.9% (23-47) from the field, 45.5% (10-22) from three, and 76.9% (10-13) from the line.
TNU outrebounded LU 23-21 and had fewer turnover, 25-29. TNU had a 32-24 advantage in scoring in the paint.
UP NEXT
The next game is a home game at Trojan Fieldhouse with another old conference foe and future Gulf South Conference foe in No. 7 Union University (4-0). The Bulldogs arrive in the Music City on Tuesday for a 6:00 PM non-conference tilt. The Bulldogs, picked to win the league, won the GSC Championship last year and advanced to the NCAA South Region semifinals. Union is a former TranSouth Athletic Conference foe of the Trojans in the NAIA era.
