Trevecca Women's Basketball | No. 7 Union Wins Rivalry Renewal; G-MAC Home Opener Nov. 28

NASHVILLE - The Trevecca Nazarene University Women's Basketball team (2-3, 0-0 G-MAC) lost to No. 7 Union University (5-0), 109-86, at Trojan Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs are the favorite to win the Gulf South Conference this season. Trevecca will be a member of the Gulf South next season. 
 
BREAKING IT DOWN
The Bulldogs dominated the first quarter, starting strong, with a 17-4 run that included the Bulldogs hitting all four three-point attempts with Courtney Zensen hitting two. Trevecca found its composure with a 15-7 run to close the half. Trevecca attacked the Union press and the basket, drawing fouls and hitting all eight three-throw attempts in the run.   
 
Trevecca extended the run into the second quarter, carrying it to a 21-7 run. Trevecca hit 10-10 from the line in the run, led by Keeley Carter led the team with nine points in the run. Trevecca took the lead at 25-24 with 7:18 to go in the quarter on a Keeley Carter layup. Courtney Zenzen hit her third three of the half, giving the Bulldogs the lead, 29-27, one they would not relinquish again. It ignited a 13-2 run, giving the Bulldogs a 10-point lead (39-29) with 4:47 to go in the half. Trevecca made another run, this time a 14-7 run, that closed the Bulldog lead to three (46-43) with 1:42 remaining in the half. Kor Frnesa Liu led the effort with six points. Trevecca hit all five field goals and all four free throws in the run. UU closed the half on a 6-0 run for a 52-43 lead.
 
The Bulldogs extended their run to 14-4 in the third quarter, building a 60-47 lead. From there, the Bulldogs slowly added to their lead and led 81-65 at the end of three quarters. In the fourth, the Bulldogs continued to build their lead and again outscored the Trojans in the quarter, 28-21, for a 109-86 victory.
 
KEY PLAYERS
Keeley Carter led the Trojans with 26 points, hitting 9-16 from the field with four rebounds, and assist, and two steals. Konnor Gambrell (14), Amaya Thomas (10), and Kor Fornesa Liu (10) all reached double figures in scoring. Gambrell led the team with eight rebounds while Lili Wilken and Jayda Woods topped the team with four assists each.
 
TEAM TIME
Union hit 13 three-pointers and outrebounded Trevecca 39-38. Trevecca turned it over 31 times against the Bulldogs 40 minutes of full court pressure, giving the Bulldogs 21 more field goal attempts.
 
UP NEXT
The Trojans open their final Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season on Tuesday, November 28 when the University of Findlay (4-1, 0-0 G-MAC) visits Trojan Fieldhouse at 5:30 PM. They hit the road for a pair of games in league play. First, at Ursuline College (4-0, 0-0 Great Midwest) on Thursday, December 7 (5:30 PM) and then at Lake Erie College (1-1, 0-0 Great Midwest) on Saturday, December 9 (1:00 PM). The Trojans return home for one final game before the Christmas break, when Saginaw Valley State (2-3) visits on Saturday, December 16 (4:00 PM).
 
Findlay owns a 7-4 advantage in the all-time series. Trevecca swept the series last year, going 2-0 and have one three of the last five. The Ursuline Arrows have won the last two meetings, evening the all-time series at 10-10. Trevecca won 10 of the previous 11 meetings. Trevecca leads the Lake Erie series 7-2, but the Storm beat the Trojans in the last meeting, 67-64. LEC won the first meeting in the series, meaning Trevecca claimed the next seven. Trevecca and Saginaw Valley are playing for the first time in women's basketball.
