Trevecca Athletics | Trojans Second Tennessee School to add STUNT to Intercollegiate Roster

NASHVILLE – Trevecca Nazarene University will field a competitive STUNT program beginning in the fall of 2023, athletic director Mark Elliott announced on Wednesday (Nov. 23, 2022).

"STUNT is a fast-paced, high intensity, 4-quarter team competition that has emerged as the fastest growing female sport in the NCAA," Mark Elliott said. "This is another way for us to provide a great opportunity for female athletes to compete in a technical, athletic event and, at the same time, contribute to the enrollment growth of Trevecca.

STUNT is another growth point in our mission of Christian-Scholar-Athlete."

Trevecca is adding a sport that is growing across the United States. Colleges are adding STUNT so quickly, it is hard to get an accurate account of how many collegiate teams are in existence to date or will be added by next year when the Trojans join the parade of new programs. It is believed there are 66 collegiate teams (including all three NCAA divisions and NAIA varsity and club teams) in the country, up from 48 just last year.

STUNT IN TENNESSEE

The Trevecca Trojans STUNT team is the second announced program in the Volunteer State. Last year, the University of Tennessee at Martin announced they are adding STUNT.

STUNT IN THE GREAT MIDWEST

Trevecca's conference, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, took the leap earlier this year, announcing the addition of STUNT as a championship sport for the 2022-2023 season (Press Release). The inaugural Great Midwest STUNT conference championship is set for March 31-April 1, 2023 at Ashland University.

Trevecca's addition of STUNT brings the conference participating teams to six (2023-24 school year). The other five are Ashland University, Malone University, Tiffin University, Ursuline College, and Walsh University.

 STUNT FACTS

STUNT, believed to be the fastest-growing intercollegiate sport in the country, was created by USA Cheer in July 2010.

STUNT is currently on the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women list and is being pursued by the Committee on Women's Athletics (CWA). Legislation is up for a member vote at all three Divisions at the January 2023 NCAA convention.

STUNT removes the crowd-leading element in cheer and focuses on the technical and athletic components. STUNT includes pyramids, basket tosses, partner stunts, group jumps, and tumbling.

STUNT features a head-to-head competition between two schools with four-quarters of competition. Each competition runs between 45 and 60 minutes generally and is scored based on execution. The four quarters of a STUNT game include partner stunts, pyramids/tosses, jumps/tumbling, and a team compulsory routine.

STUNT is a spring sport that runs from February to May.

STUNT NCAA PROGRESS

In April 2020, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics (CWA) recommended the addition of STUNT as an emerging NCAA sport. The CWA reasserted its endorsement in February 2022. Also, STUNT has been recommended by the NCAA Strategic Vision Committee to all three Divisions of the NCAA.

STUNT has been approved by the NCAA D-II and D-III Councils and was reviewed by the D-I Council in October. The sport worked closely with the NCAA to develop rules and regulations for STUNT teams and games.

Now, the members of all three NCAA divisions are considering formally adopting the sport at the 2023 NCAA Convention in January.

The Committee on Women's Athletics proposal underlines the rising high school STUNT participation, the persistent addition of the sport by NCAA members, and the backing from USA Cheer as the centerpiece of the reason to add STUNT as an emerging sport for women.

WHAT'S NEXT

Once the new coach is named, recruiting will begin immediately.

The new STUNT team arrives on campus in the fall of 2023.

The Trojans will begin practice during the fall 2023 semester, with the first STUNT game expected in the spring semester of 2024.
