Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Start 2-0 with Second 3-0 Win in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Emily Moore and the Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (2-0) started the 2021 season with a pair for 3-0 wins at the University of Alabama Huntsville Invitational in Spragins Hall. Trevecca opened the season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) win over Ouachita Baptist University (0-1) and paired that with a 3-0 win over Emmanual College on Friday.

GAME ESSENTIALS

THE SERIES

vs. OBU | The win is the first for the Trojans in the series with Ouachita. The Tigers lead the series 3-1.

vs. EC | Trevecca won the first-ever volleyball match between the two schools.

THE MATCH

vs. OBU | After losing the opening point, Austyn Baldwin delivered her first of 12 kills, and Trevecca carried the momentum to a 4-2 lead. Despite the opening set remaining close, the Trojans led the rest of the way. Baldwin had four kills in the opening set.

The second set continued to be close, but the Tiger pulled ahead 13-10 midway through the set. Ellie Buffler delivered a kill starting an 11-5 run that put the Trojans up 21-18 before finishing the set on a 4-1 run and a two-set lead. Buffler had five kills in the set.

The third set continued the competitive play, but Ouatchita had the set in their favor during the early points and led 11-8, trying to extend the match. Buffler turned the table again with a kill, fueling a 4-0 run on the serve of Hannah Bornemann. After a service error leveled the match at 14-14, Ellie Buffler served the Trojans to an 8-0 run and a 23-14 lead. Buffler collected three of her six service aces during the run. Trevecca settled on a 25-18 set win, sealing the match.

vs. EC | After losing the first point of set one, Trevecca steadied their nerves and scored five straight for a 5-1 advantage. The Trojans did not trail again in the set. Emmanuel cut the Trojan lead to two at 12-10. Trevecca finished the set with a 13-4 run, sealed with Hannah Bornemann serving out the set with the final six points. The six-point run included three service aces, counting the final point. Bornemann produced four aces in the set.

The Trojans did not trail in the second set after starting the second frame with three straight points.

The third set looked different than the first two. In the first two sets there was only one tie and one lead change. In the third set, there were 14 ties and three lead changes. Emmanuel led last at 16-15, but tied the set again at 20-20. The Trojans stayed focused on the finish line and finished on a 5-1 run.

TOP PLAYERS

vs. OBU | Austyn Baldwin led the way with 12 kills (.611% / 12 K | 1 E | 17 TA) and added four blocks and two digs. Ellie Buffler paced the team with 17 points behind 10 kills, six service aces, and two digs. Lydia Yonce produced five kills, eight digs, and three blocks. Chloee McDaniel created 33 assists with five digs and a service ace. Claire Hindman topped the team in digs with 14.

vs. EC | Ellie Buffler collected nine kills, two assists, two service aces, five digs, and two blocks for another stat-stuffing match. Lydia Yonce turned in seven kills, hitting .294, with an assist, seven digs, and two blocks. Cara Maguire and Austyn Baldwin added six kills each.

THE TEAM

vs. OBU | Trevecca hit .298 (40 K | 12 E | 94 TA) for the match and hit .333 in the second set. Trevecca had nine blocks and service aces. The Trojans held the Tigers to a .108 hitting percentage (32 | 21 | 102).

vs. EC | Trevecca hit .311 for the match and peaked hitting .400 in the first set.

Saturday, the Trojans play the host Chargers of Alabama Huntsville at 1:30 PM.
