Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Win Fifth Straight; Best Start since 2012

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (7-2) is off to its best start since the 2012 team started 7-1. The Trojans added a pair of wins on Saturday at the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-10) win over Fisk University and a 3-1 (25-13,25-17,21-25,25-19) win over Maryville St. Louis (3-4) on Saturday in Jones Gym.

 

The two wins give the Trojans a perfect 5-0 week and equaled their win total of 2018.

THE SERIES

Before today, Trevecca last met and defeated Fisk in 2016. The only other match played against Fisk came during the 2011 season, a match the Trojans won in three sets. TNU leads the all-time series 3-0.

 

Trevecca dropped last season's meeting with Maryville in three sets which leveled the all-time series at 1-1, but now the Trojans have a 2-1 edge.

 

THE MATCHES  

GAME ONE: Trevecca 3, Fisk 0

Fisk managed to secure matches first point before Trevecca established the early lead of 7-4 … the Bulldogs would take the next point to pull within two but that's as close as the set would get … a 4-0 run by the Trojans separated the two squads to 15-8 … Mary Holmberg (SR/San Marcos, CA) finished the first set with a kill from Chloee McDaniel (FR/Hendersonville, TN) … TNU won the first set 25-21 … off Claire Hindman (SO/Westfield, IN)'s serve the Trojans grabbed the second set's first four points … Trevecca held leads of 8-2 and 14-6 in this set … Ellie Buffler (FR/Nashville, TN) had six of her 15 kills to help the Trojans take the set 25-16 … Trevecca jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set … the closest the Bulldogs would get is 8-4 … back to back service aces by Elizabeth Cook (SO/Phoenix, Arizona) helped the Trojans finish off the Bulldogs 25-10 and win the match.

 

TOP PLAYER

Austyn Baldwin (SO/Kingston Springs, TN) aided the Trojans attack with a .636 hitting percentage (7 K, 0 E, 11 TA). The middle blocker also provided one assist, two service aces, two digs, and three block assists.

 

THE TEAM

The Trojans hit .276 (41 K, 14 E, 98 TA) with an impressive .813 (13/0/16) percentage in the third and final set in game one …

 

GAME TWO: Trevecca 3, Maryville 1

Trevecca opened the first set with a 6-1 edge and never allowed Maryville to ever threaten, winning 25-13 … Maryville held an early lead in set two, but Trevecca wrestled it away for good at 16-15 and finished the set strong with a 10-2 run … Trevecca led early in set three, but Maryville turned a 14-10 Trojan lead into a 25-21 win on a 15-7 finish … the fourth and deciding set was close throughout, but it was only tied once as Trevecca never trailed winning 25-19.

 

TOP PLAYER

Ellie Buffler led the way with another double-double collecting 16 kills on a .256 hitting percentage, adding 11 digs and three service aces … Chloee McDaniel had 47 assists with nine digs … Madison Martin added a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs … Claire Hindman had 24 digs and Lydia Yonce added seven kills, four assists, and 14 digs

 

THE TEAM

Trevecca hit .395 (17K-2E-38TA) in the opening set and closed out with .200 (11K-3E-40TA) in the fourth … Trevecca hit .195 for the match

 

WHAT'S NEXT 

The Trojans continue their journey of road matches with a visit to Jackson, Tennessee to play Union University (4-3) at 7 PM on Tuesday, September 17.

 

The match will be the 31st in the series, with the Trojans claiming a win in four of the last six games. However, the Bulldogs own a 26-14 advantage in the all-time series.
