OWENSBORO, KY. - The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (1-1) opened the 2018 season by splitting a pair of games on Friday at the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational (KWC Invitational Home).

The Trojans fell to Brescia University (6-5, 0-0 RSC) 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 17-25) before defeating Bluefield State College (0-1, 0-0 ECAC) 3-0 (25-5, 25-5, 25-6) at KWC's Woodward Center.

GAME 1 CHRONICLE

Trevecca 1, Brescia 3

Trevecca fell into a 4-0 hole before rallying to tie the first set at 8-8 … TNU stayed within two points most of the first set, but never led … BU took set one, 25-18 ... both teams battled early in the second set … the teams had six ties before the Trojans took the lead for good at 11-10 … TNU won the second set, 25-22 … the Trojans got off to a hot start in set three, taking a 6-1 lead … BU rallied and tied it at 8-8 … TNU extended its lead to as much as three until BU went on a 9-0 run … the Trojans then trailed 21-16 and lost the set 25-20 … in the fourth and final set the Trojans jumped ahead early once again … holding a 7-3 lead, both teams traded points until BU tied it at 15-15 … BU used an 8-2 run to take control of the final set … BU won the set, 25-17 and the match.

Trevecca is 9-2 in the NCAA era versus Brescia.

Austyn Baldwin led TNU with a .462 (7 K, 1 E, 13 TA) hitting percentage ... … eight different Trojans had at least one kill … Madison Clements (10) and Madison Martin (11) both reached the double-digit kill mark … Gracie Pierce had a team-high 20 digs while Hannah Bornemann had 22 assists.

TROJAN TEAM TRENDS

Trevecca hit .282 in the fourth set (13 K, 2 E, 39 TA), for the match TNU hit .221% (45 K, 15 E, 136 TA) … Brescia was held to a .213% hitting percentage.

GAME 2 CHRONICLE  

Trevecca 3, Bluefield State College 1

The Trojans jumped out to a 9-1 lead before BSC managed their second point … TNU then strung together a 7-0 run to take a commanding 16-2 first set lead … TNU closed out the first set on a 9-3 run … the Trojans took the first four points (4-0) in the second set … the largest lead of the second set was 20, when the Trojans took a 24-4 lead, and the set 25-5 … in set three the Trojans claimed the opening point for the third time … this time the Trojans jumped out to a 13-1 lead … the Trojans combined for 10 service aces in the third set … TNU took the third set, 25-6.

Trevecca is 1-0 in the NCAA era versus Bluefield State College.

TOP TROJANS

Mary Holmberg had a perfect 1.000% (5 K, 0 E, 5 TA) while Madison Martin hit .833% (5 K, 0 E, 6 TA) … 10 different Trojans had at least one kill … Elizabeth Cook led the team in digs (6) while Leilani Victor had a team-high nine assists … Hannah Bornemann had a team-high six service aces.

TROJAN TEAM TRENDS

Trevecca opened the match with a .579% (13 K, 2 E, 19 TA) hitting percentage in set one ... for the match TNU hit .509% (32 K, 5 E, 53 TA) while Bluefield State hit -.211% (4 K, 12 E, 38 TA) … the Trojans recorded just one receiving error against 21 digs and 22 service aces.

WHAT'S NEXT 

Trevecca concludes their tournament road trip with contests against Oakland City University (0-1) at 11 AM and Maryville University-St. Louis (0-1, 0-0 GLVC) tomorrow in Owensboro. 

The Trojans last faced the Mighty Oaks in 2016, taking both matches in three sets. The Trojans have met the Saints just one time before, claiming that match in three sets.
