Trevecca Avenges Loss, with 87-53 Rout of Oakland City

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca men's basketball (9-14, 2-3 G-MAC) avenged a loss earlier in the season to Oakland City University (20-4) by running away from the Mighty Oaks 87-53. Trevecca led 44-26 at the half and nearly matched that margin in the second half, outscoring OCU 43-27 in the second stanza. OCU defeated Trevecca 78-67 in Indiana on January 26.

 

The Mighty Oaks never led in the game. Nick Drake hit a jumper :52 seconds into the game and the Trojans led the rest of the way. Peyton Henry gave the Trojans their first double-figure (16-6) lead when he hit a jumper with 14:51 remaining in the first half. A Kendall Wittmer three-pointer with 13:16 to go in the half cut the Trojan lead to just five (17-12), but when Marquise Rudolph hit a jumper at the 6:47 mark the Trojans lead was 11 (30-19) and OCU would not be able to cut the lead to single digits again. Trevecca led by as many as 19 in the first half and led by 18 (44-26) at the half.

 

Trevecca scored the opening basket of the second half, pushing their lead to 20 points for the first time. The Mighty Oaks cut the Trojan lead to 16 a couple of more time, but the time (52-36) was on a Brandon Morton layup with 16:36 remaining. The Trojan lead eventually moved into the 30 point range. T.J. Bell hit a three-pointer with 4:25 remaining and the Trojan lead was 35 (81-46). The Trojans eventually won by 34 points, 87-53.

 

Senior Marquise Rudolph, from Clarksville, led Trevecca with 26 points and added seven rebounds, three steals, and hit 9-of-13 from the field. Maliek Daniels (15), JP Nyadaro, and Eric Orr (10) also reached double figures in scoring. Orr had a double-double with 13 rebounds and chipped in an assist in just 19 minutes of play. Daniels added three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Nyadaro had six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. Peyton Henry led the team with four assists and added a block and two steals.

 

As a team Trevecca shot 51% (31-61) from the field, 25% (5-20) from three-point range, and 74% (20-27) from the foul line. Trevecca outrebounded OCU 49-39. TNU topped OCU 40-14 on points scored in the paint while having advantage in points off of turnovers (21-7), and fast break points (12-2).

 

The Mighty Oaks shot just 26% (17-66) from the field, 28% (4-14) from three-point range, and 68% (15-22) from the line. Kendall Wittmer led the way with 12 points, hitting 4-of-6 from three-point range. Brandon Morton scored eight and added 12 rebounds. Oaks leading scorer Mitch Stahl, who averages 23 points per game, was limited to just eight points.  

 

Trevecca will travel to Pulaski, Tenn. for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday night at Martin Methodist. The RedHawks are 17-9 and 8-1 at home. Trevecca defeated MMC 65-56 in Nashville on January 15. MMC is receiving votes for the NAIA Top 25 and led the TranSouth with a 7-1 record. The RedHawks have won nine in a row since Trevecca defeated them at the Trojan Fieldhouse.
