No. 20 LMU Drops Overtime Three and Trevecca

HARROGATE, Tenn. – NCAA Division ll No. 20 Lincoln Memorial (9-1) defeated Trevecca (3-10) 78-75 in overtime at the Tex Turner Arena. Lorenza Ross hit a three-pointer with two seconds remaining in overtime to give the Railsplitters their ninth win of the year. Maliek Daniels led Trevecca with a  career-high 34 points.

In the first half, the Trojans and Railsplitters both shot the ball well. LMU opened the game with a 6-0 lead, while Trevecca rallied to take their first lead (11-10) with 14:25 to go in the half. Trevecca led by as many as four, but LMU flipped the score and held a 3-point (33-30) halftime lead.

TNU hit 13-of-27 (48.1%) from the field including 4-of-9 (44.4%) from three-point range. LMU shot 50% (12-of-24) from the field and connected on half of its three-point attempts (3-of-6).

Daniels scored 16 first-half points as Trevecca and Lincoln Memorial battled back and forth. The first 20 minutes featured six ties and eight lead changes. Neither team held  a lead bigger than six points.

Cam Carden led the Railsplitters with 12 points while hitting three 3-pointers. LMU used its size advantage out-rebounding TNU 19-10 and getting to the foul line 10 times and converting six of them.

The host Railsplitters pushed their lead to five (35-30) to start the second half, but Trevecca kept Lincoln Memorial close and regained the lead (44-43) with 14:06 to go. With LMU leading 45-44, Trevecca had their biggest run of the game. TNU outscored 10-1 to take a 8-point (53-45) lead with 9:58 to go. LMU turned the table and outscored the Trojans 13-2 to take a three point (60-57) lead with 5:08 to go. The teams battled to the close of regulation in a 64-64 tie.

In overtime LMU scored the first basket and never trailed. The Trojans tied the game five times, but were never able to regain the lead in overtime. With :24 seconds on the clock Trevecca's Maliek Daniels tied the game for the game at 75-75 with a jumper. With the shot clock off LMU held for the last shot and found Lorenza Ross who hit a three-point basket with :02 on the clock. Trevecca's last shot attempt was no good and the Trojans fell 78-75.

Aside from Daniels 34 points, Trevecca picked up double-figure scoring from an ill JP Nyadaro (13) and freshman Nick Drake (11). Marquise Rudolph scored six points and grabbed six rebounds while adding a team-high seven assists against just one turnover in 42 minutes at the point. Daniels contributed in other areas beside the scoring column. The senior added a team-high eight rebounds and five steals. Drake matched Daniels with five steals and was 3-for-6 from long range. Daniels was 4-of-7 from the three-point distance himself.

As a team Trevecca shot 49% (30-61) from the field, 40% (8-20) from three-point range, and 70% (7-10) from the foul line. The Railsplitters topped the Trojans in rebounding 38-22, but Trevecca forced 22 LMU turnovers while giving up the ball just 13 times.

Trevecca held the edge in points off of turnovers 20-12 while LMU dominated bench scoring 22-0, points in the paint 46-34 and second chance points 13-2.
