Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca volleyball team (1-0) opened their 2012 season with a 3-0 win over Covenant College (0-1) 25-13, 25-22, 25-19. The match served as the opener of the 2012 Scott Jones Classic @ Trevecca. Trevecca is now 6-3 in the SJC all-time.
Trevecca dominated the opening set 25-13 with a .286 attack percentage. Trevecca took the opening point and held the lead the rest of the way. In the second set, a 25-22 TNU win, the Trojans only produced a .050 attack percentage. The second match was a tight set with six ties and four lead changes. In the third and final set, Trevecca had 12 kills and four errors for a .250 attack percentage. With Trevecca leading 18-17 in the final set, the Trojans rolled to the finish with a 7-2 spurt.
Kirsten Taylor and Kristen Johnson led the team with nine kills apiece. Persephonie Devereaux added seven. Caroline Gay, a freshman from Murfreesboro, had 15 assists in her collegiate debute. Kristen Johnson added nine assists. Taylor and Loren Bennett led the team with nine digs. Kristen Johnson had seven digs for an all-around performance.
Coach Crowley said, "I was pleased with the communication, chemistry, and energy of our team today. Especially knowing that we played so many freshmen. We showed the depth that we believed we had during training. The depth will prove to be a great benefit as we progress through the season. Depth hasn't been something we've had in my five years here. We've had great players, but not in large numbers."
Trevecca will take on Kentucky Christian University (1-0) on Saturday at Noon. The Trojans will finish play in the SJC with a match against former conference foe Martin Methodist at 2 p.m.
