Trevecca Nazarene University announced Matheus Mello as the new women's soccer coach on Monday afternoon. Trevecca Athletic Director Mark Elliott formally introduced Matheus Mello for the first time as the university's new head coach. He is the seventh coach in Trevecca women's soccer history.
Elliott said of giving Matheus Mello the reigns to the Trevecca women's program, "To hire from within, arguably places more pressure on the candidate to distance themselves from other candidates. Matheus convinced us he was the right person for the job by his understanding of our Christian-Scholar-Athlete philosophy and his overall vision for the soccer program. The plan he presented was persuasive and impressed those in hiring process."
Mello said of the opportunity, "First, I want to thank God for placing me at this amazing university and for guiding every step of this journey." He continued, "I am incredibly grateful to my wife, who has been my rock and constant source of support throughout this process."
"I also want to thank Mark Elliott and the entire athletic department for trusting me with this opportunity. I believe deeply in this group of young women and in the vision we share. It is an absolute honor to lead the Trevecca women's soccer program, and I am fully committed to building a team that lives out the Christian-Scholar-Athlete mission both on and off the field. I am excited for what's ahead and grateful to be part of this incredible community."
Mello served as the lead assistant for Nathan Harrell for the last two seasons.
The 30-year-old native of Sao Paulo, Brazil played soccer in youth academies in Brazil before moving to the United States in 2015.
Mello played and graduated from Faulkner University with a Bachelor's in Computer Science and a Master's in Science of Management with an emphasis in Business Analytics.
Mariano Monzú, Trevecca's Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration joined in the interview process and endorsed the hiring of Mello, "I was highly impressed with Matheus during our meeting." Monzú, a Trevecca soccer alum and member of the University's Athletic Hall of Fame, added, "I quickly recognized his clear passion for the game, strong understanding of the sport, and genuine ability to connect with others. It is evident why he is so well-regarded by student-athletes and staff alike. I am confident that Matheus will align seamlessly with Trevecca's culture of Christian-Scholar-Athlete and will lead a strong and successful women's soccer program."
Before Faulkner, he played at Cowley College. As a defender for the Tigers, he made the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division All-Conference First Team.
He coached at his alma mater, Faulkner University, from 2020 to 2023.
Before Faulkner, he coached on the high school level at Montgomery (Alabama) Academy, leading the team to a 2023 6A State Runner-up finish.
His coaching experience includes time coaching in youth soccer at Alabama FC and Tennessee United.
Married to Hannah Nicolaisen, the couple lives in Nashville.
