Assistant Coach

Shavicka Newsom

Joined the Trojan coaching staff, prior to the 2023-2024 season, with over 20 years of basketball experience. 

Shavicka served as the Fisk University head basketball coach from 2014-2018. There she coached a pair of honorable mention NAIA All Americans (2015, 2018). She also coached the conference player of the year (LaShae Brown), two All Conference first team, and two second team all-conference performers.  

Coach Karen Booker said of Shavicka joining the program, “Shavicka brings head coaching experience as the former head coach at Fisk University. She also brings knowledge as a player, as she was a stand-out player for Fisk. Coach Newsom will be working extensively with the guards, sharing her vast experience with our guards. She is strong in her faith and character combined with a tremendous work ethic."

During the 2013-14 season, Newsom was the assistant men's basketball coach at Fisk University.

In addition to her experience at Fisk, Newsom coached in the high school ranks at Whites Creek High School and Antioch High School, both in Middle Tennessee. During these two stints she contributed to a pair of coach of the year staffs and coached several all district and all region players. 

She also spent over ten years coaching in the Tennessee DREAM program, which is produced 20 collegiate basketball players.

Over the last four years, Newsom served as Program Manager of Community and Curriculum Development at Salama Urban Ministries. An organization focusing on young people's growth in Academics, Arts, and Spiritual Development.

Coach Newsom said of her joining the Trojan coaching staff, “I am happy to join the women’s basketball staff and the Trevecca community. I look forward to working with Coach Booker and bringing my passion for basketball and working with young people to Trevecca.”
