Trevecca Men’s Soccer | Douglas Hat Trick Lifts Trojans Past Freed-Hardeman, 4-3

HENDERSON, Tenn. — Chris Douglas completed a hat trick with 1:07 remaining Tuesday night, giving Trevecca Nazarene University men's soccer a 4-3 road victory over longtime rival Freed-Hardeman University.

Trevecca (7-1-2, 2-1-2 GSC) won its second consecutive match and moved within one victory of the program's NCAA Division II era season high of eight wins, reached in 2013 and 2018. The Trojans are three wins from the all-time program high of 10, set in 2003.

Douglas returned to the lineup after playing for the Antigua and Barbuda national team in CONCACAF competition last week, where he scored two goals and recorded two assists. His three goals Tuesday gave him 10 in eight Trevecca appearances this season, an average of 1.25 per match.

The 10 goals match Jonathan Baskin's Trevecca single-season high from the NCAA era. Douglas has 21 points this season and 21 goals and 47 points in his Trojan career.

Freshman Zion Jones scored his fourth goal of the season, and Jose Garcia assisted on two of Trevecca's four second-half goals.

THE SERIES

The win gave Trevecca an answer to the Lions' 4-3 victory in Nashville on Sept. 17, 2024. Trevecca owns a 13-2-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Lions. The Lions win last year in Nashville was their first as the road team in the series with the Trojans.

THE MATCH

Freed-Hardeman went in front at 27:45 when Martin Theissen scored off an assist from Sam Sebagabo. The Lions carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Trevecca needed less than four minutes after the break to pull even. Garcia set up Zion Jones at 48:39, and the freshman scored his fourth goal of the year to make it 1-1.

Douglas gave the Trojans a 2-1 lead at 58:56 with his first goal of the night and eighth of the season. Freed-Hardeman answered with goals credited to Henry Appiah and Evans Osei Amankwah, turning the one-goal deficit into a 3-2 lead.

Trevecca came back again. Garcia supplied his second assist at 67:23, finding Douglas for the goal that tied the match at 3-3.

The score held until 88:53, when Douglas scored his third goal of the half and the match winner. It was his 10th goal of the season and the first three-goal match of his Trevecca career.

Garcia's two assists were his first in a Trevecca uniform. Hunter Walker made two saves as the Trojans finished the night with their seventh win. Freed-Hardeman fell to 6-3-3.
