Trevecca Men's Soccer | Trojans Upset #19 Carson-Newman; 3-0 for First Time Since 2006

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Not since recently announced Trevecca Hall of Fame inductee Calvin da Cunha was patrolling the back for the Trevecca Nazarene University men's soccer team have the Trojans gotten off to a start like this in a season.

Trevecca (3-0) earned their second clean sheet of the season on Wednesday afternoon, with this one coming on the road at 19th-ranked Carson Newman University (1-1-1), 1-0. The Trojans are 3-0 for the first time since 2006 when they won their first four matches.

THE SERIES

Trevecca now inches in front in the all-time series with Carson Newman. The win was the Trojans' second in their last three matches against the Eagles, and they are now 1-0-1 in Jefferson City all-time. The win on Wednesday joins a 2-2 draw on September 5, 2024. Trevecca also won the team's battle in Nashville in 2025.

THE MATCH

The match got off to a tentative start, as the first statistical action in the match did not occur until the Trojans earned a corner kick opportunity late in the seventh minute. Carson Newman had the first shot of the match, a shot that came in the 14th minute, and Trevecca registered their first attempt in the 21st minute. Trevecca had the only shot on goal in the opening half of play, but that try did not come until the 45th minute, and it was turned aside by Elijah Buford. At intermission, the match remained deadlocked in a goalless draw.

The Eagles carried the play in the opening moments out of the break. Carson Newman fired five shots in the first seven minutes of play, with four of those being on-target, but Trojan keeper Hunter Walker was equal to every task and the score remained unchanged into the 59th minute.

That's when Trevecca broke through. The Trojans brought the ball ahead and Daniel Shiel rang a shot off the left post that ricochetted into the right wing corner. The Trojans gathered the ball and resumed their attack, and a cross from Judah Jones found the feet of Haden Brown who buried a shot in the low right corner of the goal to give Trevecca the 1-0 lead.

Over the next few moments, the Trojans continued to press, as they fired six of the next seven shots in the match including one that was turned aside by Carson Newman goalkeeper Ivar Steggo Forsse who had entered at halftime.

Late in the match, though, Carson Newman pressed forward looking for the equalizer. The Eagles' Jonas Friedl hit the crossbar with a try in the 82nd minute, and in the 85th, Samuel Ulrich missed wide to the left. The Eagles got one more great chance in the dying seconds, but with less than two seconds to play in the match, Walker dove to his left and denied Bink Groothuijs the equalizer, as the Trojans held on to win, 1-0.
